Vanity Thread: Reporting an odd occurrence yesterday in Houston
10/29/05 | kinghorse

I experienced something weird driving around 4:30 PM CST yesterday and decided to vanity post to see if any other Houston people know about this.

I was driving on the Houston West Park Tollway yesterday when it happened. I'm attempting to gather more information about before contacting authorities.

If you were on this tollway in Houston yesterday, did anyone else notice the large open 30 X 30 shipping door attached to a warehouse before you get to Gessner and Beltway 8 on the right side of Westpark going west? It's got a large square aluminum or ss steel tubing assembly with rotating spray fittings situated about every five feet of the tubing spraying out a fine mist. It looks like the frame to a gigantic sports net without the net, but what it is is a giant spraying station or maybe even a large automatic car wash, if you get my drift. The only problem, it's big enough to drive a Mack truck through.

When I saw this and I swear I did, I immediately thought of the mystery smell reported in Manhattan Wednesday night I believe. I had my windows down in the car and as soon as I passed this place downwind I smelled a smell almost like cocoa butter or a very sweet fragrance presumably emanating from this structure. I got goosebumps when I ran into this smell after seeing the contraption. What a way to test area coverage. You couldn't miss the smell if you encountered it. I imagine a group trying to ascertain the efficacy of an aerosol attack would send out a signature smell first to determine wind drift and coverage.

How difficult would it be to lease empty whse space around a town and set up thes misting contraptions connected to a air compressor and a venturi atomizer spraying something sinister into the air? Around Harwin and Westpark there are miles of cheap whse space in business parks. Every big city has these areas that abutt residential areas. First responders would perish along with the people unlucky enough to be hit by the chemical or biological substance being sprayed. I imagine perps could set up such a contraption and just walk away and watch the mayhem. It's be like a sniper scene where the people coming to save get taken down until you have big pile of people and the hazmat people show. Terrifying.

I'm going back over there today to see if it's something normal for manufacturing before call the police. Crazy times and because it's been so long between a huge attack, everyone's letting up their guard. I'm not.

I have deciphered the clues in your post and have arrived at a conclusion. First, the clues:

Big enough to drive a truck through

Smelled like cocoa butter

Large square aluminum or ss steel tubing assembly with rotating spray fittings situated about every five feet of the tubing spraying out a fine mist

Downwind

Conclusion:

Hillary Rotten Clinton was getting a massage.

While that's true .. you're assuming EVERYBODY does things the legal way.

We had a tenant who took over 4-5 suites within a complex and opened the whole thing up with inside doors - weakening the wall structures and ceilings. We didn't know about it until after he moved out - BECAUSE HE NEVER BOTHERED TO GET ANY PERMITS TO DO THE WORK - probably because he knew the work would never be approved.

After that fiasco, we informed all our tenants they must have a city permit for any changes within the suite - and it must meet our approval first. If they were found to have not complied with that - they would be evicted immediately.

I'm in Pennsylania but I applaud your vigilance.

You can smell that cocoa butter all the way in Pennsylvania? Wow, we'd better alert somebody!

I would change that to "possibly weakening". A door, properly installed, will support more weight, than the surrounding structure. Most commercial properties are built with light weight steel studs, anywhere from 10-16 ft or more long. They are more cosmetic, than structural. The roof spans are designed to take the interior loads, and distribute it.

I guess yours was wood. Most commercial places have suspended ceilings, as well. They're just hanging around!

Well .. "possibly" won't cut it. We had 3 construction people come out and bid the job and all of them agreed (without knowing what the others had said), that at least 2 of the walls were tetering on brink of collapse and a third was also suspect.

This was an old complex. These people not only put their employees in danger, they left the complex wide open to be sued up the ying-yang for any death or injury which might have resulted from their negligence.

Call the local pro-dem newspaper and tell them you think some big chemical company is screwing around. Mebbe Halliburton, or Schlumberger or one of those republican donor outfits!!!

That'll get their attention.

In the fall on a frosty still night you can smell one from hundreds of yards away.

People were smelling it from 10 miles away. I believe.

I recommend Glenlivet.

Good choice! You might consider a bit of Irish also. 12 year old Jameson is GOOD STUFF.
