Not only are they paid, benefited and pensioned more, they work way way less.

It takes them an hour, hour and a half to 'load up the truck, discuss the days 'work objective', stop at the donut shop for a coffee and get to the site. Then it's what, break time. Another 30 minutes to unload the truck...Then it's hour and a half lunch time... Not to mention three brand new trucks where one will do, but then you'd need three because you have five workers and a supervisor, where in the dreaded private sector you'd have two men and a truck that would be done by morning break.

In the offices, the gooberment employees all act like they work in slave mines. And how can they physically move so slow? Anything they are paid to do, and are hired to do, and is there job...well, they'll do it for you, but as a favor ya know? You kind of owe them.

Their entire competitive culture revolves upon and is fueled by seeing who can do the least for the same money as everyone else.

In by 9, out by 4 unless it's Friday, then it is no one around by 1 in the afternoon.

Sick days, comp days, training days, personal days...

What a bloated article. Learn the beauty of economy of words, fer Chrissake!

That being said, it does seem that quite a few state and local public employees are living, er, rather high on the hog.

Thank God I'm a federal employee. We give an honest day's work for an honest dollar.

It's long, but the numbers about local and state gov't. are mind boggling . If you're not in one of the mentioned states, guess what's probably coming your way.

The guy sure had a lot to say.

The argument has always been that the public servants are paid less than people in public sector. To attract good employees, government has to make up the discrepancy in salary with better benefits and retirement plan. However, in most places, one has to work at least 10 years before he can be vested in the retirement system.

Such tactics are especially unsettling in health care. Even worse, when a Connecticut local affiliated with SEIU went on strike against nursing homes, workers engaged in vandalism and sabotage aimed at patients, according to an investigation by the state’s attorney, including removing identification bracelets from Alzheimer’s patients, feeding chocolate to diabetics, and loosening bolts on lifts used to support patients.

Unions need to be destroyed.

Public-employee unions have so successfully used their political muscle that whereas public-sector compensation once lagged the private sector, now the reverse is true. Astonishingly, the average state and local government employee now collects 46 percent more in total compensation (salary plus benefits) than the average private-sector employee, according to the nonpartisan Employee Benefit Research Institute.

Wages average a hefty 37 percent higher in the public sector, but the differences in benefits are even more dramatic. Local governments pay 128 percent more, on average, than private employers to finance workers’ health-care benefits, and 162 percent more on retirement benefits. Although the private sector’s heavier concentration of low-wage service employment accounts for some of the wage and benefit gap, public-sector employees do better these days even when you compare similar jobs. Total compensation among professional workers in the public sector is on average 11 percent higher than for similar jobs in the private sector, for instance.

Thank you for this article. I live in an area full of government workers and retirees and have often thought they have no clue about the real world of the private sector. The irony is that many still think they make less but just have more security than the equivalent employee in the private sector.
