Not only are they paid, benefited and pensioned more, they work way way less.
It takes them an hour, hour and a half to 'load up the truck, discuss the days 'work objective', stop at the donut shop for a coffee and get to the site. Then it's what, break time. Another 30 minutes to unload the truck...Then it's hour and a half lunch time... Not to mention three brand new trucks where one will do, but then you'd need three because you have five workers and a supervisor, where in the dreaded private sector you'd have two men and a truck that would be done by morning break.
In the offices, the gooberment employees all act like they work in slave mines. And how can they physically move so slow? Anything they are paid to do, and are hired to do, and is there job...well, they'll do it for you, but as a favor ya know? You kind of owe them.
Their entire competitive culture revolves upon and is fueled by seeing who can do the least for the same money as everyone else.
In by 9, out by 4 unless it's Friday, then it is no one around by 1 in the afternoon.
Sick days, comp days, training days, personal days...

Not to start an argument, but not all of what you read is the typical State or local government employee behavior. I will start by agreeing with you that in a lot of areas, taxing and levies have been outrageous. Additionally, there are numerous public employees who cheat and manipulate the system. However, there are a lot of public servants, like I was, who are grateful for the job and trust that the public gives us. In my thirty years of public service, I suffered a broken femur (twelve weeks in traction), shoulder reconstruction, two broken vertebra, and several concussions. That's just the physical aspects.
Again, there are numerous flaws in the system and I will be the first to lead the charge in public service scrutiny. But please remember that there are millions of public servants who work their jobs with the idea that the public deserves the best possible service for the hours worked.
