Battleground poll reveals Americans disillusioned with government

A just-released political survey by George Washington University contains bad news for Democrats and Republicans because it lays bare a public seemingly disenfranchised with both major parties.

The Battleground poll – unique for its inclusion of top Democrat and Republican pollsters – shows a definite slide in support for President Bush and the GOP. But the survey contains little good news for Democrats as a viable alternative.

The poll found just 44 percent of the public is satisfied with President Bush's job performance – a figure well below his two-term average but still slightly higher than other recent polls showing his approval at all-time lows.

"The mounting casualties of American troops in Iraq, the higher gas prices certainly put a dampening on any of the good news about the economy, and you had the surfacing scandals with Republicans in the House, the Senate and the White House, potential scandals," said GOP pollster Ed Goeas.

While a Republican retreat in the polls normally means good news for Democrats, there is little evidence Americans are enamored with the opposition party, survey results indicate. On a host of issues – Iraq, homeland security, the economy – Democrats don't fare much better, the poll indicated.

"There is a real void right now in terms of what the alternative is. And right now, Democrats suffer from the fact that Americans are disillusioned and distrustful of government in general," Democratic pollster Celinda Lake told Voice Of America. "They tend to be feeling more negative about the Republicans, but not particularly positive about the Democrats."

Goeas believes Democrats' inability to capitalize on Republican weakness is actually encouraging.

"But the Democrats, whether you look at the image of the Democratic Party, whether you look at Democrats in Congress, not only did not gain anything, they actually had their negatives go up some during this period of time," he told VOA.

And, the survey noted, Republicans continue to hold an edge in the public's eye on issues related to taxes and terrorism. Democrats, meanwhile, fare better with health care, jobs and education.

The mid-October poll surveyed 1,000 registered likely voters nationwide. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.

I'm for smaller gov, little or no taxes, big time legal immigration reform, total secured borders, total RTKBA, trade laws that benefit American's etc. Only way all that happens is when both parties are killed off and rendered meaningless.

I hope this doesn't offend anyone.

Apparently, he believes in spraying unprecedented amounts of our money all over the place to grow the size and influence of government.

This is conservatism?

As long as the debate and disagreement is about the substance of the issue, all is fair. When the personal stuff starts flying, (and it did on both sides during the Miers thing), that's worth ignoring.

IMO, this little family brawl was a very constructive event. We have refocused on important, foundational principles.

Problem is, most people are fed up and they don't know why.

They'll say things like "I just don't like all the fighting" or "I don't like the rich getting richer and I can't find a job". That's the kind of crap I hear all the time.

Look, I'm sick of the spending, boarders, RINO's, energy dependency, etc. But that's not what most people in these polls reacted to. They reacted because of all the bad press in Iraq and legal witch hunts.

I just had a good friend, a Christian, ask me today what's going on. He had no idea. He just heard that Bush was in trouble.

I have to explain things to him every few months to keep him on the right track with things. If I didn't, his wife is a MSM junkie and she would dictate everything the MSM would like him to think.

I hate to say, but people have got to get educated or the MSM will be able to do this anytime there's a Pub administration.

The photo should make you look gubernatorial.

See what happens when you mess with my graphics?

Problem is, most people are fed up and they don't know why.

Then I would suggest they stick with the two partys. Those that haven't a clue, should stay where they are. They are part of the problem.

Not so bad, but the glasses are a little creepy! T-Shirt is a little low key - you're applying for a job, after all. The photo should make you look gubernatorial.

Hmmm.

Smith & Wesson Code 4 safety glasses at the range and a "Roof-Tops" tee-shirt?

Low key, a thousand dollar suit at expensive restaurant?

Now I am confused.

I am confused!

If one showed up at that restaurant in a tee shirt I would know that one is not bright. If one shows up at the range in a suit I would know that one is a phony.

I choose to dress appropriately.

Of course I am not too bright either!

Understand - all I'm saying is you want to convince people you should be governor. I wish you the best of luck, btw! Any chance of getting on the ballot?

"coupled with an understanding that capitalism without moral moorings, while still superior to socialism, fails too, in the long run."

True, but a citizenry without moral moorings will fail too. Unfortunately, the moral moorings must be voluntary in a free country.

"capitalism without moral moorings, while still superior to socialism, fails too, in the long run." "

This is why the ACLU relentlessly attacks, and removes anything religious in a public place.

No offense to me in any of what you said. I've been for all that spanning 30 years now. The Party killing part, well I've been the loyal Republican for all but the last year and a half, that's when they told me to take a hike, I haven't looked back. Blackbird.
