Battleground poll reveals Americans disillusioned with government

A just-released political survey by George Washington University contains bad news for Democrats and Republicans because it lays bare a public seemingly disenfranchised with both major parties.

The Battleground poll – unique for its inclusion of top Democrat and Republican pollsters – shows a definite slide in support for President Bush and the GOP. But the survey contains little good news for Democrats as a viable alternative.

The poll found just 44 percent of the public is satisfied with President Bush's job performance – a figure well below his two-term average but still slightly higher than other recent polls showing his approval at all-time lows.

"The mounting casualties of American troops in Iraq, the higher gas prices certainly put a dampening on any of the good news about the economy, and you had the surfacing scandals with Republicans in the House, the Senate and the White House, potential scandals," said GOP pollster Ed Goeas.

While a Republican retreat in the polls normally means good news for Democrats, there is little evidence Americans are enamored with the opposition party, survey results indicate. On a host of issues – Iraq, homeland security, the economy – Democrats don't fare much better, the poll indicated.

"There is a real void right now in terms of what the alternative is. And right now, Democrats suffer from the fact that Americans are disillusioned and distrustful of government in general," Democratic pollster Celinda Lake told Voice Of America. "They tend to be feeling more negative about the Republicans, but not particularly positive about the Democrats."

Goeas believes Democrats' inability to capitalize on Republican weakness is actually encouraging.

"But the Democrats, whether you look at the image of the Democratic Party, whether you look at Democrats in Congress, not only did not gain anything, they actually had their negatives go up some during this period of time," he told VOA.

And, the survey noted, Republicans continue to hold an edge in the public's eye on issues related to taxes and terrorism. Democrats, meanwhile, fare better with health care, jobs and education.

The mid-October poll surveyed 1,000 registered likely voters nationwide. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percent.

"He won't need one....he's running on the cheap so he doesn't need any PAC money unless it's a 12 pack"

I once wanted to go to AA, but kept getting 12 step and 12 pack mixed up

I'd love to come up there, but Houston traffic make San Antonio traffic look like a picnic in the park.

I happen to be obligated to drive through San Antonio no less than
six times in the next two months.. wildlife harvesting dontchaknow.

I'd be happy to transport some of your finest to the Eaker compound / campaign headquarters!

At the border twice a week to personally inspect the DPS, Rangers and milita that will man it to take up the slack of the BP who can't, won't or are not allowed to do their jobs......Any illegal caught deep inside Texas will be dropped off back at the border within 24 hours of getting caught ! If they are OTM's then he'll drop em off in Louisana instead.

I'm a registered Conservative. I could vote for a conservative democrat, and I believe such an animal exists, and that quite a few of these animals helped re-elect President Bush.

But what neither party seems to get is that people, all reasonable, patriotic people long for a leader who is a true believer. Bush is a true believer in Iraq, and there's nothing wrong with that, but he's not a true believer in much else.

The country needs a person who understands what he understands about Iraq, coupled with an understanding that capitalism without moral moorings, while still superior to socialism, fails too, in the long run. And that decadency degrades a Nation.

The endless leeching of jobs out of this country, the inordinate amount of education spending, and the non-commensurate results of such spending, the unwillingness or inability of leaders to address systemic national cripplers, these are not favorable dispositions.

We need re-founding Fathers, renaissance (sp?) men, and I don't see them anywhere. Are we really still a Republic, or are we on the downside of Franklin's warning?

I agree with much of what you said, sinkspur, and it may indeed be futile. I think a lot of conservatives might consider supporting a party and candidate that was more Goldwater than the spend and spend crowd currently in Washington though.

Being "fed up" wont do anyone good if something isnt done on election day about it. I'm going 3rd party.

I've already re-registered as Independent and unless the immigration laws are enforced, I'm going Third Party in the national election.

Please, don't bother shaking that Democratic Ju-Ju doll in my face and claim they will then get elected. I've been doing the "lesser of two evils" bit for years and am damned sick of it.

Yeha I think alot of folks think this is a joke .....we'll see who's laughing when the election is over. I have one on my vehicle and my teams vehicles and our local gun range and gun shops have already run out of the first production run......Folks are pissed at the way money is wasted just on elections alone. Well this campaign is so grass root that it won;t get to the grass stage at all.....honest !

We need another Ronald Reagan type, someone people trust and who can withstand liberal character assassination tactics.

I don't trust Republican candidates because I don't trust the Republican Party. The party doesn't care at all about principles, except the principle of getting reelected - they will let anybody claim to be a Republican and claim to be conservative.

Example? How many here were in love with Tom DeLay, and how many hundreds of billions has he happily squandered (as recently as last month) on reelection pork and useless crap?

Why didn't the Republican Party shoot down some of the pork earlier this month, when given the opportunity to do so? What was the Senate vote to keep the pork in place - 85-to-15 as I recall?

I'm done with these idiots.

If Eaker has to debate Kinky and Perry then I suggest it be in the Menger Hotel Bar so Teddy Roosevelt's ghost can pick the winner. And we know he'd pick Tom !
