Do college campuses lean left?
Minneapolis Star Tribune ^ | October 19, 2005 | John Tierney

I am in debt to liberal scholars across America. After I wrote about the leftward tilt on campus, they sent me treatises explaining that the shortage of conservatives on faculties is not a result of bias. Professors helpfully offered other theories why conservatives do not grace the halls of academe:

1 Conservatives do not value knowledge for its own sake.

2 Conservatives do not care about the social good.

3 Conservatives are too greedy to work for professors' wages.

4 Conservatives are too dumb to get tenure.

I've studied these theories as best I could (for a conservative), but somehow I can't shake the notion that there just might be some bias on campus.

I can imagine various reasons why liberals would be intrinsically more inclined than conservatives to pursue academic careers. But even if that's true, it doesn't explain why there are so many more liberal professors now than there used to be.

Surveys last year showed that Democratic professors outnumber Republican professors by at least 7 to 1, more than twice the ratio of three decades earlier. The trend seems likely to continue, because younger professors are far more likely than older professors to be Democrats.

You could argue that fewer conservatives today want to become professors, but that seems odd, given the country's move to the right in recent decades. Conservative student groups and publications are flourishing. Plenty of smart conservatives have passed up Wall Street to work for right-wing think tanks that often don't pay more than universities do, and don't offer lifetime tenure and summers off.

At think tanks and other research institutions outside academia, there's a much higher percentage of Republicans than there is on university faculties. Apparently, despite their greed and other failings, many conservatives do want to become scholars, but they can't...

Do campuses lean left? Only because a chunk of their faculties are made up of aging radicals and hippies who never left.

An outward Conservative professor has about 10 % chance of getting tenure while a Liberal who propagandizes instead of teach has about 100% chance.

Liberals maintain the hold say they can continue to destroy and influence the minds of young people. If the liberal professors are able to maintain that hold, and the conservative, and even middle of the road, groups are not allowed to make information available, America will collapse from within, just as every great civilization has gone. Help by forcing the schools and colleges to allow recruiters access to the students, organize tables and information booths at the schools to distribute information that is accurate and portrays both sides. Get involved.

UMich was kind enough to send me an alumni email featuring Floyd Abrams as a speaker at some hall on campus. His talk will describe the Academic Bill of Rights as an attack on free speech.

The world is upside down to the academic world Foucault and Derrida would be so proud.

Do college campuses lean left?

Of course they do. Professors overwhelmingly make campaign donations to the left. Their dominance is not because they are any smarter, as some of them arrogantly claim. Doctors, who are also smart, give about equally to each side. I've written about this below, and am trying to get it in shape for publication in a journal.

The hostility in their responses are the real reason. Liberals hate unashamedly and without restraint. The lack of morality in their lifestyles also dominates their political and social relationships. It's the mentality of the Final Solution.
