Islam feminists urge gender jihad

Organisers of the first international congress on Islamic feminism are calling for a "gender jihad."

Organiser Abdennur Prado Pavon says the struggle for gender equality in Islamic countries involves refuting chauvinist interpretations of Muslim teachings.

The congress is in Spain, organisers say, because they want their message to reach the growing number of Muslim women in Europe.

Around 300 delegates are looking at women's rights in the Islamic world.

Mr Prado, of the Catalan Islamic board, believes a common misconception in the West is that women's liberation is not possible in Muslim societies.

Activists representing the Islamic feminist movement are in Barcelona to counter that view and discuss ways of achieving female equality in an Islamic context.

Collaboration

Among the delegates is the Pakistani feminist Riffat Hassan, regarded as one of the pioneers of Islamic feminist theology.

Also here are representatives from the international association, Islamic Feminism.

Islamic Feminism argues that the inferior legal and social status of women in Muslim countries is a result of misogynistic distortions of the teachings in the Koran.

Organisers say they want more collaboration with western feminists but say non-Muslim feminists need to challenge their anti-Islamic stereotypes.

"is a result of misogynistic distortions of the teachings in the Koran"

When are these poor fools going to realize that teachings of the koran are not distorted but rather the problem is the koran itself? The whole reform notion is like trying to milk a duck. Why try to change what was never good and has nothing of value to begin with. With such stupid thinking, perhaps the Germans should dust off the Mein Kempf and try to reform Nazism.

I've got a better idea sister hajib...throw the F*&%^ng koran away and stop revearing the piece of sh*& Mohammed (may pig turds cling to his beard).

Yeah, when the men declare jihad against these women, I wonder what their life expectancy will be? Brave women that they are, they probably won't be around very long. Accidents DO happen, you know.

Well if the Islamic anti-women sterotype fits, better wear it(but under the burka or risk being stoned to death).

Long way to go for these ladies. You never hear the men speak about their wives, sisters or even mothers. (Except that dude that wrote about the proper way to beat a woman.) The only women they speak of are the 76 virgins awaiting them after their death. Women are cattle.

If you can't follow the religion then get out of it.

This is just another group that has run afoul of their religion and wants it changed to accomodate their beliefs.

Koran"4.34": Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!

All this time all the lefties I know think we should be MORE like middle eastern countries cause they're so great about civil/equal rights. I wonder what they'll say when they see this!

"The congress is in Spain, organisers say, because they want their message to reach the growing number of Muslim women in Europe. "

They have to go to SPAIN to have their meeting? Oh yeah, let's be more like the Middle East - where liberals have to have demonstrations in other countries! Can you imagine Citizen Sheehan chaining herself to the Kremlin to protest the Iraq war?

Quite simple, really. Just get rid of everything in the Koran that the pedophilic psychopath Mohammed wrote, and every interpretation of everything that he wrote. Of course, all that would be left of the Koran would be the binder, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Pull out the troops and send over 175,000 recent Women's Studies graduates. That'll teach 'em.
