Hello Dolly (Hey that's kinda catchy..smile),
Are you sure about that FR History in the box above? I seem to remember finding FR in 1996 and I don't remember exactly, but it seems like there WAS a forum in 1996. Seems I found it right around Election time when I was dejected because Clintoon had won a second term. It was strictly a "Whitewater" discussion then, from what I recall. It was good to find people who were as disgusted with that bunch as I was and I got hooked. I know there was the posting of articles when I first found FR because at that time there were only 20 or 30 articles posted a day. That's how I found it. I was searching AltaVista for Whitewater news and information. I landed on FR and never left. Back then, I could catch up on all the day's happenings in a half hour or so. Now, forget it, I could stay on FR for 24 hours a day and never read all the articles and comments.
I have enjoyed FR from day one when it was an infant. Doug From Upland used to humor us with his limericks. I used to post comments before we were even required to register. It's been a good ride. Not so fun during the Clintoon days, but it's gotten better all the time.
Long Live FreeRepublic!!!!
Hi, gooleyman,
I also was 'reading' some stuff on FR in late 1996; the information I posted about the "forum being started in early 1997" came from a thread several years ago about the history of FR and its founder. I know that it was in 1997 that registration was required in order to post comments. I don't know how to find that particular thread anymore, but the "100,000" being registered since it's inception in 1996 apparently is outdated - on the home page at present, Jim writes "over 200,000" have registered for posting privileges...... :)
"Who reads FR?
Over 200,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic since inception in 1996 and our forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and all around the world.
