WASHINGTON - Working against the clock, Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald weighed criminal charges against top presidential aides at the end of a two-year investigation that put the White House in a state of high suspense Thursday night.
Fitzgerald raced against a Friday expiration of the grand jury that has been investigating the exposure of covert CIA officer Valerie Plame's identity. Speculation flew across Washington about who would be indicted, or whether Fitzgerald would even bring criminal charges.
White House colleagues feared Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, would be indicted Friday for at least false statements but held out hope that presidential political adviser Karl Rove might escape criminal charges for the time being.
A person outside the legal profession familiar with recent developments in the case said Thursday night that Rove's team does not believe he is out of legal jeopardy yet but likely would be spared bad news Friday when the White House fears the first indictments will be issued.
Fitzgerald signaled Thursday he might keep Rove under continuing investigation, sparing him from immediate charges, the person said, speaking only on condition of anonymity because of the secrecy of the grand jury probe.

It's all about the indictment. Never mind proving the case.
Don't tell anyone who I am because I am a crook?
I agree and the other night on one of the tv shows, mention was made of how easy it is to indict a ham sandwich -- the response was "well at least a ham sandwich has meat on it."
This will be a political indictment. NO MEAT.
Yahoo placed this POS article in its headlines last night. I saw a headline with no correlation to the truth. They just put a headline out there to further their agenda and never elaborate with any facts. Then, they repeat their lies and distortions.
"Why would WH fear anyway?"
oh the 'Rats & the MSM will run with this 'til the cows come home!!!
and the sad part about it is, that Fitz might continue the investigation ad infinitum...
look at the Cisneros investigation by special counsel...hell, that's been going on now for ten friggin' years!!!
Any idea how many there were?
Now why wouldn't anyone believe such a paragon of truth? LOL.
All hopeful speculation by the AP. "Fitzgerald signaled?" What does that mean? If Libby is going to be indicted, he knows it already because he has received the target letter.
"Behind the scenes the White House is laughing at all the mental fake orgasm that the Left and their media were having for the last few weeks thinking that they finally got ROVE, well they did not."
not so quick, Fitz can continue his investigation ad infinitum...or at least until a judge shuts him down!
look at the Cisneros investigation that's been dragging on for ten years now!!
Does your cat know she has been outed?
Ciesneros is the first to come to mind.
not yet! LMAO
Pray for W and Our Troops
Kellynla, this is the Democrat's plan to either get rid of or neutralize the Republican leaderhip that are effective before the '06 and'08 elections.
The Democrats have given up on winning elections and are resorting to kangeroo courts where they control the judges and prosecutors.
If you dig deep enough, you will find Hillary's fingerprints all over this.
Legally there has been no crime committed here or in the Delay case.
Hillary Clinton and her minons have committed more crimes than they could be prosecuted for if court was held 24 hours a day from now to the end of the world. But for some reason the Bush Administration refuses to allow her to be prosecuted. Same thing with Sandy Berger.
Anyone here read about Libby's friendship with Marc Rich? Somehow, I think he's (Libby) is expendable.
