WASHINGTON (AP) -- House Republicans voted to cut student loan subsidies, child support enforcement and aid to firms hurt by unfair trade practices as various committees scrambled to piece together $50 billion in budget cuts. More politically difficult votes -- to cut Medicaid, food stamps and farm subsidies -- are on tap Thursday as more panels weigh in on the bill.
It was originally intended to cut $35 billion in spending over five years, but after pressure from conservatives, GOP leaders directed committees to cut another $15 billion to help pay the cost of hurricane recovery. President Bush met with House and Senate GOP leaders and said he was pleased with the progress. He also appeared to endorse a plan by House Speaker Dennis Hastert's plan for an across-the-board cut in agency budgets, perhaps including the Pentagon, by the end of the year.
"I encourage Congress to push the envelope when it comes to cutting spending," Bush said.

So let's feel encouraged and kill The Prescription Drug Panderation Act!
This is a good thing, but still, $50 billion is like pissing in the ocean.
Why doesnt he call a press conference and Demand it? Encouragement never works...by the way Bush...fire Andy Card the clown.
So why couldn't they have cut this and more even pre Katrina?
And of course remember the word "cuts" here just means reductions from the grossly increased budgets for various pork.
Boy, that pathetic little backstabbing weasel never misses an opportunity to #uck our domestic industries, does he?
Snow's Beijing Cave-In Leaves China Policy Critics No Choice But to Fight White House
Gee, why couldn't they do this anytime between 1995 and 2004? Instead, we now have a federal budget that is $2,700,000,000,000.00
50 Billion over 5 years is insignificant.
Should I hope for the GOP to finally jettison the Education Department?
His manic obsession with globilized outsourcing has made him worse than Ozone Algore and Ralph Nader.
We've had $1 trillion foisted upon us in programs over the past five years and supposed to get excited over $50 billion?
Not anytime soon. Not after they almost doubled spending for it.
Yeah, I know, it's a real waste of money. If we could ever get decent education to the welfare state residents there would be no welfare state. And there in lies the problem. There is no more stark example than that exposed in New Orleans by Katrina.
OH MAN! Perfect! Line of the DAY!
Bush and the GOP are starting to get the message that the natives are restless
I don't know how this will play in Peoria. Sounds a bit like they're taking away money from groups that need it to give it to a group that currently needs it more. If the public attitude toward Congress is as down as it seems, this will give opposition candidates some ammunition.
Because they didn't know how po-ed and powerful the conservatives were until Meier.
PBS/NPR..let them fend for themselves. Their left wing supporters would not likely pay up! Change would occur.
Got an E-mail from Senator Coburn today. He is encouraged by what is taking place now.
