WASHINGTON - Harriet Miers withdrew her nomination to be a Supreme Court justice Thursday in the face of stiff opposition and mounting criticism about her qualifications.
Bush said he reluctantly accepted her decision to withdraw, after weeks of insisting that he did not want her to step down. He blamed her withdrawal on calls in the Senate for the release of internal White House documents that the administration has insisted were protected by executive privilege.
"It is clear that senators would not be satisfied until they gained access to internal documents concerning advice provided during her tenure at the White House disclosures that would undermine a president's ability to receive candid counsel," Bush said. "Harriet Miers' decision demonstrates her deep respect for this essential aspect of the constitutional separation of powers and confirms my deep respect and admiration for her."
How utterly silly. The Miers incident will be a footnote in history and the Bush presidency, just as the Ginsberg nomination is today a footnote in history and Ronald Reagan's Presidency. Ginsberg withdrew and this was after the defeat of Judge Bork.
George Bush will put up a solid conserative. Most Republicans will rally around that nominee. The dems will give us a fight and we will be united again.
The whole Miers debacle will be forgotten in a few months, if not sooner.
Because President Bush appointed her. /sarcasm
You've got it a** backwards. You couldn't be more wrong. And the nice thing is, we won't have to wait long to prove it. : )
Ann made some over the top remarks about the President, opposed his last two nominations and among so many on the forum, her name is now mud.
It goes to show you can disagree with your enemies, but don't disagree with your friends. It's a much higher price too pay.
REAL conservatives understand exactly how important the Supreme Court Nominees are and opposed Harriet Miers.
and among so many on the forum, her name is now mud.
You don't speak for me and a lot of others on this forum that hold a different opinion of Ann. As you gave your opinion, I'll give mine. Mine is that there are more people on this forum that like her as opposed to not liking her. If you can make a sweeping generalization, so can I.
