Conservative Women's Group Calls for Miers's Withdrawal Nominee Resubmits Questionnaire A WALL STREET JOURNAL NEWS ROUNDUP October 27, 2005; Page A4

WASHINGTON -- Conservative opposition to Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers spread as the Concerned Women for America, the largest women's association of social conservatives, called for her withdrawal.

The move came after the group reviewed a 1993 speech by Ms. Miers that raised questions about whether she would oppose the constitutional underpinnings of Roe v. Wade, the landmark abortion-rights ruling. (See transcript of speech.)

"We believe that far better qualified candidates were overlooked and that Miss Miers's record fails to answer our questions about her qualifications and constitutional philosophy," said Jan LaRue, CWA's chief counsel.

The Family Research Council, another organization of social conservatives, called Ms. Miers's 1993 speech "very disturbing" but stopped short of outright opposition.

In the speech to the Executive Women of Dallas, Ms. Miers referred to the abortion debate and said, "the more I think about these issues, the more self-determination makes the most sense.

Legislating religion or morality we gave up on a long time ago."

A White House spokesman noted that Ms. Miers didn't say the concept of self-determination gives a judge license to strike down a law, and that Justice Clarence Thomas also has talked about the principle of self-determination, which is different from the idea of personal autonomy.

Sen. Charles Schumer (D., N.Y.) said he hopes Ms. Miers's answers will be "both illuminating and complete. But the $64,000 question remains: Who is Harriet Miers? In some ways, the more we hear, the less we know."

Never thought a day will come when I agree with Shumer, the ambulance chaser. Oh well, it is not my fault.
