I've heard lots of special-effects fans rave about how they can't wait to see the movie. I loved Jackson's LOTR approach, but a remake of King Kong doesn't interest me at all. I love the 1933 original. The originality of that movie is what is impressive. The 1933 audiences, seeing a movie with (for then) convincing special effects of a giant ape and dinosaurs, and the ape climbing the recently finished Empire State Building with a hot gal in his hand must've blown their minds.

The remake can only impress us with its digital ingenuity (which includes even the look and time period of the original), but these days, digital technology can pretty much recreate anything, so it's hard to be impressed with special effects we now pretty much take for granted. I'd rather Jackson had done something original with the budget and the technology.

I agree.

There are some movies that shouldn't be remade.

It would be like someone painting Leonardo's Mona Lisa again.
