OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) - A son of the controversial late leader of a black Muslim group here was shot and killed in what police described as a botched carjacking.

Antar Bey, 24, was shot at an Oakland gas station Tuesday.

Bey was the appointed successor to Yusuf Bey, a leader in the Bay area's Muslim community who died of colon cancer in 2003.

The 67-year-old was best known as the founder of Your Black Muslim Bakery, famed for its bean and carrot pies and known as having an open door to struggling families.

But Yusuf Bey's reputation took a hit in later years as he defended himself against allegations in Alameda County that he raped young women from 1976 to 1995. Those charges were later dropped.

Members of the Black Muslim organization, which includes retail businesses, a school and housing units, said there has been a struggle for control of the Bey empire since Yusuf Bey's death.

Two other relatives have also been targets of violence.

In July 2004, police found the badly decomposed body of Waajid Aljawaad Bey, 51, the president and chief executive of Your Black Muslim Bakery, buried in a shallow grave in the Oakland hills.

This summer, a gunman ambushed and seriously injured John Bey, the adopted son of Yusuf Bey, as he left his Montclair area home.

"Black Muslim organization" and "vacuum at the top" generally rather reliably means "assassinations incoming"

Why not cabbage cookies? Or tomato-flavored candy bars? Or lima bean cake?

Could I interest you in some okra ice cream?

Want to trade recipes?

Carjacking...yeah right.

One of their rivals just capped another.

It was SUPPOSED to look like a carjacking.
