Sen. John Kerry says President Bush should bring home 20,000 troops from Iraq over the Christmas holidays if the December parliamentary elections there are successful.
Defeated by Bush last year and a potential candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, Kerry called for a "reasonable time frame" for pulling back troops rather than a full-scale withdrawal advocated by some Democrats. He said it could be completed in 12 to 15 months.
"It will be hard for this administration, but it is essential to acknowledge that the insurgency will not be defeated unless our troop levels are drawn down, starting immediately after successful elections in December," Kerry said in a speech prepared for delivery Wednesday at Georgetown University. Excerpts of the speech were obtained by the Associated Press.
The presence of 159,000 U.S. troops in Iraq is deterring peace efforts, said Kerry, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
"To undermine the insurgency, we must instead simultaneously pursue both a political settlement and the withdrawal of American combat forces linked to specific, responsible benchmarks," he said. "At the first benchmark, the completion of the December elections, we can start the process of reducing our forces by withdrawing 20,000 troops over the course of the holidays."
Kerry, who voted to authorize the use of force in Iraq, has been a strong critic of Bush's handling of the war, accusing the president of misleading the public into going to war.

and when we all hit our knees tonight we can thank God that neither Gore in 2000 or Kerry in 2004 were elected POTUS!
Semper Fi,

Kerry is aq HO..................details at 11.............
"It will be hard for this administration, but it is essential to acknowledge that the insurgency will not be defeated unless our troop levels are drawn down..."
And when we leave the suicidal terrorists will lay down arms and embrace democracy, peace and freedom. Yeah right F'n.
Is there a weasel in the room squeaking or is John Kerry speaking again?
Tell you what, Senator Kerry, you're such a brave war hero we'll bring back some troops & replace them with you. Then we'll see first hand what a tiger you are!
Bet the terrorists will be shaking in their boots.

Still not at work in the Senate!
And yes, I agree, 159,000 is deterring peace efforts by continuing the conflict.
Since we are not going to surrender and turn Iraq over to the Jihadists (as Kerry would do), we must continue to root them out and kill them.
This by definition is a deterrence to peace (in the short term)!
Just a few months ago, he was complaining that we did not have enough troops in Iraq. You'd think that since the election is over, he'd stop flip-flopping.
I'm calling on Kerry to tell the truth about his Purple Hearts in a "reasonable time frame."
1. The President is in charge of foreign policy and is commander i8n chief for good reason - so you don't have dozens of of senators each conducting independent foreign policy.
2. I thought the Democrats thought we didn't have enough troops there...
This guy is an idiot. "Yes, Senator, if there are only 130,000 troops instead of 150,000 troops, we will quit being terrorists as often." Moronic. This would just make the troops more vulnerable by weakening their overall strength.
Is Kerry spending this Christmas in Cambodia?
Re#2 I thank the Lord every single day. As to this article, the Kerry is playing to the base. I am so happy that the arrogant SOB will be running again. The rat primaries are going to be a gas....
Ok, but only after he gives each and every one of them a box of bandaids and 3 purple hearts.
What a loser!
(In every sense of the word)
Horse, meet cart.
John appears to have figured out that the last chance for his buddies to win is for us to get out before the Iraqi army is ready.
It'll happen when it happens, Clyde.
Hey Kerry, Bush will bring troops back home when he sees fit to do it, not when YOU see fit. You have a terrible track record when it comes to the military, in fact, you are a traitor and did great damage to our troops and POW's in Vietnam.
Please admit the truth, resign from your office, and begin the process of repentence. Oh, and tell your friend teddy boy to do same. Thanx.
Horseface said the same thing about Bosnia, too. NOT!
No doubt he went on to state that "the only way to reduce the crime level in Washington DC is by removing police from the city and seeking a political solution with the drug gangs and violent criminal elements"...
In Kerrys world, three purple hearts and you are out.
