In Wilma's wake, relief falls short, tempers shorter

No power, no gas, no water--and for many, no help.

South Floridians began to comprehend the long-term affects of Hurricane Wilma on Tuesday, as it became increasingly clear that residents could spend the next few days, if not weeks, waiting in lines for basic supplies, coveting working showers and toilets, and in many cases, kicking themselves for underestimating the damage a Category 2 storm could bring.

No, I'm not being sanctimonious, I'm just fed up with the number of victims who blame anyone but themselves for their plight. The state never said "Don't worry". If they did, I'd like to know who said it, when they said it, and in what forum.

I am in victim-fatigue mode.

Couple that reassuring talk with the expectation that this storm was not going to do much damage to the heavily populated southeast coast...

You weren't paying attention, were you?

Well, I remember hearing the state of Florida talking about how they have ice and emergency supplies available at points all over the state and they're regularly replenished before emergencies.

Do you remember the part about being ready to take care of themselves for THREE TO FIVE days?

***Wow. I'd like to know how they did that.***

Are you referring to how they got three adult cats in that carrier? If so, I'd sure like to know, too. While you're putting one in, the others would jump out. Oh WAIT, maybe they put catnip in the carrier and closed the top while the cats were spaced out. LOL

The state said "don't worry, we're prepared"

Correct me if I'm wrong -- but I don't think I am -- the "state" didn't say they were going to come out with the ice, etc., within hours of the storm leaving the coast.

You want to kick people when they're down, go ahead and do it, don't get sanctimonious about it.

Nobody's kicking anybody; we're just saying that there is NO reason in the world for these people to NOT be prepared, except that they do not LISTEN and PAY ATTENTION to what was going on around them.

Did the people in Miami think that they weren't going to get hit with something when Key West was CLEARLY in the strike path?

Suddenly, there are many Americans who have turned into small children, demanding they be instantly taken care of. What on earth brought around this childish behavior?

Amazing, isn't it?

O/T: Alan Dershowitz, of all people, is on Fox this very minute trashing this investigation!

And Ann Coulter is making snide remarks about Rove really maybe being Bush's brain because look what has happened to Bush while Karl is distracted.

"I don't think you'd be laughing, no, not one bit."

Well said, Trav. I can't remember a time in history when I've been more of a freak about stockpiling canned goods, pet supplies, blankets, medical supplies, and gallons and gallons and gallons of water than I have this past year.

I'm predicting at least one big blizzard and one big ice storm up by me this winter. We've already had a 40-million-dollars-in-damage tornado this season...just one town over.

Whiners, whining about any aspect of their lives, only spur me on to action to help keep MY future whining to a minimum. ;)

What if YOUR power were to go out for one month, how well would YOU do?

Upon describing to him the enormity of the then-looming Y2K Bug disaster-to-be, my father's reply to the incoming TEOTWAKI situation was "OK, I'll just toss another log on the fire and go back to my book."

Upon SHTF situations arriving:
Some are unprepared and will be distraught.
Some are prepared and will cope.
Some live self-sufficiency and will hardly notice a change.

The state said "don't worry, we're prepared" and now you're attacking people for believing them.

How many times do people have to see the state go thru the "we're prepared ... oops, sorry, guess we weren't" cycle before they stop relying on the state for things as incredibly simple as a few gallons of water and ice? Why is it socially acceptable (as indicated by the basis for your reasoning) for people to assume the state will provide ANYTHING and EVERYTHING?

Days before it hit, there was plenty of news informing the public that a category 5 hurricane was headed straight for Florida - and these people didn't even bother to get a few gallons of water???

It all gets back to local and state governments NOT BEING PREPARED. Maybe someday the people with DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY from the people that readily demand their tax dollars.

Bullshiite. It is the people not prepared... that demand to be taken care of...

It is called personal responsibility.

I watch the news, and see a lot of well-dressed, clean people standing in line for handouts. hmmmmmmmmm....

"This is incredible. I just cannot believe it," said Sanchez, 47. "I've seen this before. Miami officials said they are prepared, but they are not. Everything is a lie. We got all this technology. We've gone to the moon, but they [officials] cannot have their little act together."

Stick a few gallons of water in the freezer. Is that too much to ask? or must a gov't official do that for you?

If TSHTF, we won't be able to say we haven't had plenty of warnings to get ready.

It will be quite something, to see how our urban beehives will fare during a prolonged grid-down situation.

Don't smugly laugh at their plight, use it as a lesson for yourself. What if YOUR power were to go out for one month, how well would YOU do?

So in addition to providing the elderly with Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid and lord knows what else, because THEY CHOOSE to live in hurricane country, we're supposed to drop everything because they didn't get extra water delivered at the start of hurricane season? And didn't a couple cases of canned food in the pantry and extra meds? Cripes, Wilma gave everyone TWO EXTRA DAYS to get ready. Earthquakes and tornadoes aren't nearly so curteous.

What I see are people who fought in WWII who have gotten so used to the government taking care of their every need that they have lost the ability to take MODEST steps to care for their own well-being.

I'm not saying any of that. I'm just surprised at the almost gleeful piling on going on here. We're talking about fellow Americans in unfortunate, difficult straits, and lots of freepers seem to be jeering their plight.
