COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Air Force football coach Fisher DeBerry said Tuesday his coaching staff needed to recruit more African-American athletes, reiterating a comment he made Monday while talking about the state of his struggling program.
Academy officials released a statement Tuesday night saying they would review the remarks.
"The senior leadership of the academy is aware of media reports about Coach DeBerry's comments on minority recruiting," academy spokesman Lt. Col. Laurent Fox said. "We can not comment further until we have a chance to review all of the reports, the coach's actual statements and to speak with the coach personally."
Talking Monday about the reasons for his team's 3-5 start and the possibility of consecutive losing seasons for the first time since he became coach in 1984, DeBerry, 67, noted his team's lack of speed compared to Texas Christian University, which beat Air Force, 48-10, last Saturday.
"You don't see many minority athletes in our program," DeBerry said.
Asked during his Tuesday news conference to clarify those remarks, DeBerry responded:
"It's very obvious to me the other day that the other team had a lot more Afro-American players than we did, and they ran a lot faster than we did. It just seems to be that way, that Afro-American kids can run very, very well. That doesn't mean that Caucasian kids and other descents can't run, but it's very obvious to me they run extremely well. Their defense had 11 Afro-American kids on their team, and they were a very, very good defensive football team. That's exactly what I was talking about."

Excuse me? Look at the footage of any Olympic running event. Regardless of the country, their running entrant generally is black.
How many non-black athletes got a gold medel in any running competition in last year's Olympics?
Nobody is allowed to comment on the obvious in public?
I'm ok with that as long as we can talk about how much better whites are at learning.
Baseball coach says we need some guys who can hit the curve ball.
Apparently not to the politically correct crowd. I don't see anything racist in his comments. He is simply telling it like it is.
Find some Chinese wide receivers.
;-)
What's the problem?
So what's the big deal? Recruit some black players....end of problem!
The newsies are just aghast that he put it that way.
Well, DeBerry will be squished to juice in the very near future. However, he merely stated the truth. The fact is that schools out in the plains and mountain west have a very difficult time recruiting inner city minorities as they just are not comfortable in a rural or wilderness setting. Nevertheless, DeBerry (DeJuice) has committed a pc cardinal sin and must thereby pay the price.
Thomas Sowell points out that virtually ALL of the world's marathoners not only come from Africa, but from one particular tribe in Africa.
Sports Illustrated has, in the past, taken a swing at black/white genetic differences in sports, but failed to reach any conclusions. The two stats I mentioned above---the absolute absence of white cornerbacks/running backs in the NFL and the absolute domination of Kenyan marathoners---should alone be worthy of sustained study. But no one wants to go there.
I strongly recommend Thomas Sowell's latest book, "Black Rednecks and White Liberals," esp. his chapter on black education. In 1899, at Dunbar High School---a middle class black school in Wash. D.C.---black students OUTperformed the district's white students in math. Then libs got ahold of the education system.
It's good to know that the mission of the Academy is to win more football games. There's something for them to worry about. After all, the school might not receive the alumni funding - oh where will the US Air Force Academy receive its money?
Not really. PC trumps the obvious and the truth. I know you know this.
The Air Force should just concentrate on it's mission which is turning out qualified, educated military people. Football and the other things are not in the mission statement the last time I looked.
No, but it is one way the football coach is evaluated. BTW, if a professor of electrical engineering at the AF Academy said they needed to recruit more Blacks, it would be considered unremarkable. If he had said they needed to recruit more Orientals, he might be looking for a job.
To which I replied "black men can't swim"....
She laughed her butt off...
I don't think that the ChiComs will be intimidated by the football team's won lost record, but I could be wrong.
He SHOULD have said "We need more DIVERSITY......."
He was just discussing this with Jimmy the Greek Snyder the other day...
Oh, freaking get over it.
