Not a word about enhancing security of our borders, enforcing existing immigration laws.
It may not be the pubbies that win in '06.

He must have been speaking to the illegal's employers.

Otherwise a good speech.

WHoops - Missed this paragraph:

I signed a Homeland Security bill the other day, and when I did so I spent a lot of time talking about the need for this country to protect our borders. We have an obligation to the American people to increase manpower and technology, to increase retention space to secure our borders. That is a solemn duty of the United States and it's a duty I take seriously. And at the same time we do so, we've got to be realistic about people crossing into our country to work. We need to match willing employer with willing employee for jobs that Americans will not do, on a temporary basis. We should not be granting amnesty, but we should be saying to willing worker and willing employer, here's a reasonable way for you to be able to hire people.

That will take pressure off our border. Step one is to secure the border; step two is to have reasonable immigration policies. That will mean our border control agents won't have to worry about people sneaking into the country to work, and will have the time to stop drugs, guns and terrorists from coming into America. (Applause.)

Missed while scrolling. I did correct myself though.

As to the implementation of those two paragraphs in the speech, I will believe it when I see it.

"I spent a lot of time talking"

The gist of this paragraph is he is more worried about workers meeting employers than security.

Well, the President doeosn't say something unless he means it. You may not agree with his perspetive, but I think he believes both are important.

Frist was just on H & C talking about immigration reform, which will be brought up early next year. He was pretty specific on what he would oppose...amnesty being one of them.

At least something is being moved forward.

This is a real sore point with me. I live in southern AZ.
I give to individual candidates, not the party for this issue and others.

My wife is a naturalized citizen who legally came, did the paperwork, took the test, in English.

There are ranchers here in AZ who have found discarded journals written in farsi and arabic.

When the President calls the Minutemen vigilante's and allows the appointed Ambassador to Mexico to marry a billionaire heiress without resigning, I see very dim hope of approaching what could be "border security" between the US and Mexico.

We pay $1800 a year for vehicle insurance because Arizona has the highest rate of vehicles stolen in the US, and taken to Mexico.

There are reasons for disbelief.

Yes, and by George, he's going to stop guns from coming into this country!

That would be applicable for maybe 1% of the problem, the other 99% will still be hanging out all over at the Home Depots, taking away contracting jobs and all the starting jobs that used to acclimate all the young people into the work force.

You're right. But the day Home Depot has to pay a hefty fine for employing illegal aliens alot of the hiring of illegal aliens will stop. When I say hefty, I mean hefty. Make it hurt. And not just Home Depot... but all companies that hire illegal aliens...the little guys too.

...we ought to have people on the Court that will not legislate from the bench, but will strictly interpret the Constitution of the United States. And that person is Harriet Miers.

Weasel Word Watch. The solution isn't just "strictly interpreting" it...the solution is strictly interpreting it the way it was written! "Strictly RINO" ain't good enough.

I don't know if you've ever read de Tocqueville. You ought to. He wrote a book in 1832 about America. ...

Yeah, and de Tocqueville said:
"The American Republic will endure, until politicians realize they can bribe the people with their own money."

Why is it that while I watched this fundraising speech, I began to hear Adam Sandler saying, "I'm Crazy Spoon Man--give me some candy!" or wait...no...it was President Bush saying, "I'm Conservative Man--give me some money!"

I'm no longer buying it.

True that some companies do hire them, probably including Home Depot. I was mostly referring to them having their own areas at these stores and trying to find day labor all over the place.

Oh, but if we only give in to the criminals, then the border patrols can do their job. </sarc>

He does have bangs and that helps protect his eyes, but even during the last storm in California he was threatened by a half inch run off of water from the massive misting we were having.
He is a good guard dog, but is at risk outside his element, which to this point I have figured to be indoors eating meatball off of a toasted roll.

Did you set out to be a nattering nabob of negativity?

I thought it was a fabulous speech.

How does one separate the problem of a flood of immigrants coming across the board and the problem of security? And of course, the answer is that one cannot. One proposed "solution" is to raise the minimum wage so as to attract more natives to available jobs. Employers, of course, oppose this. I do not believe the constant assertions that native born workers will not taken construction jobs, for instance. What do you think?

If you hire an illegal alien (I don't care who you are) and you are caught... you pay handsomely...

I do think if a regular employer hires an illegal the law can fine up to maybe $10,000 for each offense in some states.
As far as gardeners, though I don't use them, they approach home owners as independent contractors and as long as they are not the sole employer and keep the fees under a certain amount, I think there is a gray area homeowners are straddling.
