During a long conversation with a senior administration official, I asked why Wilson was assigned the mission to Niger. He said Wilson had been sent by the CIA's counterproliferation section at the suggestion of one of its employees, his wife. It was an offhand revelation from this official, who is no partisan gunslinger. When I called another official for confirmation, he said: "Oh, you know about it." The published report that somebody in the White House failed to plant this story with six reporters and finally found me as a willing pawn is simply untrue.
So...it seems Novak's first source was Tenet...we know the second source was Rove, but by then the cat was out of the bag. IOW, the Cheney/Tenet conversation is ok, the Tenet/Novak conversation is not. Tenet may be in some serious trouble for this.
I'm concerned that Fitzgerald's attitude may resemble Cornelius Vanderbilt's ("Law? What do I care about the law? Hain't I got the power?"). He may indict whomever he wishes, even if they are innocent of wrongdoing. If the trial then goes to a Clinton-appointed judge, he can easily find a jury of Bush-haters in the DC area to ensure a guilty verdict. If those indicted are innocent, they may eventually clear their names, after several years of going through hell. Remember Billy Dale.
