I. Lewis Libby Jr., Vice President Dick Cheneys chief of staff, first learned about the C.I.A. officer at the heart of the leak investigation in a conversation with Mr. Cheney weeks before her identity became public in 2003, lawyers involved in the case said Monday.
Notes of the previously undisclosed conversation between Mr. Libby and Mr. Cheney on June 12, 2003, appear to differ from Mr. Libbys testimony to a federal grand jury that he initially learned about the C.I.A. officer, Valerie Wilson, from journalists, the lawyers said.
The notes, taken by Mr. Libby during the conversation, for the first time place Mr. Cheney in the middle of an effort by the White House to learn about Ms. Wilsons husband, Joseph C. Wilson IV, who was questioning the administrations handling of intelligence about Iraqs nuclear program to justify the war.
Lawyers said the notes show that Mr. Cheney knew that Ms. Wilson worked at the C.I.A. more than a month before her identity was made public and her undercover status was disclosed in a syndicated column by Robert D. Novak on July 14, 2003.

Did anyone actually read the article in the times? Read it again, carefully.
That's how.
Nope
"I went back and read Wilson's original op-ed. I'll quote it below. It looks to me like he carefully said that questions from the VP's office prompted the trip. From everything I've heard, that's pretty much how it happened."
When reading Wilson you have to distinguish what he rights and what he tells other people as a leaker.
May 6, 2003 New York Times:
"...I'm told by a person involved in the Niger caper that more than a year ago the vice president's office asked for an investigation of the uranium deal, so a former U.S. ambassador to Africa was dispatched to Niger. In February 2002, according to someone present at the meetings, that envoy reported to the C.I.A. and State Department that the information was unequivocally wrong and that the documents had been forged.
The envoy reported, for example, that a Niger minister whose signature was on one of the documents had in fact been out of office for more than a decade. In addition, the Niger mining program was structured so that the uranium diversion had been impossible. The envoy's debunking of the forgery was passed around the administration and seemed to be accepted -- except that President Bush and the State Department kept citing it anyway.

I love your writing. Looks like something I might say.
I was simply posing the question. FWIW, I don't trust Tenet any farther than I could throw him (but I don't trust many people anyway, so that's no biggie).
The media should have checked out Wilson's account and got the FULL story before running with it.
It really doesn't matter at all right now. What matters, is WHAT actually happens.
leakfest . fitz knows he will need the press to pull this one off .
Me either!
Didn't Bennett lie to a judge when he was representing Clinton?
Not lie, he was mislead by Clinton.
Cliff Notes?
As much as you want to place all your anti-Bush chips in the NYT's Pot, You're gonna be disappointed again.... But WTF, there is always next time....right?
Are they hoping to share a Pulitzer prize in journalism ?
Have they submitted their entry yet ?
I am going to buy a N.Y. Times tomorrow and take a leak on it!
what are you seeing? I'm seeing the article trying to make the spin that Libby, if he is indicted for obstruction or perjury, that he did so to protect Cheney - the first person to reveal Wilson's wife occupation to him.
No, probably not. Instead, Tenet evidently identified her as "Joe Wilson's wife".
Recall that is how everybody seemed to know her and refer to her. Until Bob Novak had the presence of mind to look up Wilson's entry in Who's Who and found that he was married to "the former Valerie Plame".
It turns out she didn't actually go by her maiden name. But, instead, went by Valerie Wilson ever since she'd married our friend, Joe.
But, until Novak identified her, she was known to all the parties only as "Joe Wilson's wife, who works at CIA".
do you have a link to the entire editorial??
Also- any idea where we can find confirmation who actually sent Wilson??
thanks a bunch!
Fineman is indicting Cheney on Scarborough, right now
