Proposing an analogous social or intellectual explanation for the willingness of the Chinese people to serve as Mao's slaves, to kill and to denounce one another, is an even more difficult task--and Chang and Halliday do not address it.

Oooh, oooh, I can answer that. My father was on a Navy ship that sailed up into China between the end of WW2 and the Communist take-over to remove American troops from up near the Russian border. He's told me stories of local boats collecting the garbage off of his ship and then auctioning the slop in boxes to hungry people on the shore. As my father put it, when people are starving, they'll go with the person who offers them a bowl of rice, even if, as apparently happened, that person eventually winds up starving them, too.

A very interesting article. Thanks for posting it.

I noticed that Fidel Castro has been left out of the Lenin, Stalin, Mao, Nazi mix. Castro murdered his detractors by the hundreds in a foot ball stadium at the beginning of his reign, others have followed on a regular basis – Castro will allow no dissention, ever.

In the film The Red Violin, there is a part where Mao’s take over is made very clear. It shows the ugly and progressive demands made upon the people. The Chinese version of Communism is no less diabolical than Stalin’s or Castro’s, all rob the human spirit while reducing the human being to a rat like existence in a maze.

The “intelligentia” in this country see communism as a bucolic picture much like a Currier and Ives painting in this country; they obviously have never lived under Communist or Marxist rule, they are safe in their Ivory Towers teaching the myth and praising the tyrants as "heros" - laboring stiff takes on new meaning. There is a huge difference; in America the simple life was full of innovation, learning, successes; everyone had/has a chance with both luck and hard work, anyone can make it to the “top”. In Communist Russia there were/and still are simply starving slaves while the few elite live in luxury. Socialism and Communism breed such elites; Hillary Clinton is one of the latter as she stated in June of 2004, “We’re going to take things away from you for the common good”. That is what a Marxist does and that is what Hillary is. The Real Hillary is nothing like what she displays for the public; America is nothing to her it is power she wants. She is not a Margaret Thatcher or Golda Maier who loved their respective countries and their people…Hillary Clinton has other plans for America regardless of history, she will strive to dominate the American People to her will. The Siren Call of POWER is Hillary’s Achilles heel.

And not just in China. One need look no further than liberal arts professors in US Universities and in some of the Rat members of Congress.

"Mao had been responsible all in all for the death of some 70 million Chinese. "

Hey Leftists - maybe it will sink in now. (and shame on the NY Times for printing yesterday that Mao did lots of good for "woman's" issues.
