You would be surprised how long the tarps keep the roofs from leaking. Most of Orlando was covered in tarps last year after the hurricanes. I waited until May before I finally got my new roof.

My parents in Destin rushed to tarp their roof as soon as Ivan ended last summer. Their roof is steeply pitched and my father rigged this elaborate pulley device to get their tarp in place (very ingenious fellow my dad). Had a heck of a time and put himself in much jeapordy. Bless his heart, he worked so hard on it all day long. The next morning the Fema people came into their neighborhood and did all the neighbors' roofs in a few hours. Be careful though. The fellow across the street from my parents had a tarp put on their roof and it turned out that they really didn't have enough damage to warrant a new roof. His insurance company wouldn't pay, but he had to buy a new roof anyway since all the nails from putting the tarp on caused so much damage.

Firring strips are a standard item at Lowes or Home Depot. They'll know what you mean and can recommend nails to use with them.

Superstorm Of 2005

A superstorm will come together off the East Coast Tuesday. The ingredients for this storm are Wilma, energy from Alpha and a rogue storm forming along the mid-Atlantic coast. These system will likely remain distinct, trackable features rather than combining into one storm. However, the combined energy from these storms will create a superstorm effect along the northeastern coast Tuesday. The rogue storm will strip moisture from Wilma and direct heavy rain toward the coast. Farther inland, the moist air will be lifted up over a cold dome of air and the first major snowstorm in the Northeast will get underway late Monday night into Tuesday night. In addition to the precipitation, gale force winds will hammer the area. Winds 60 mph to 70 mph will hit the coast of New England with gust of 40 mph to 50 mph farther inland.

Does this really seem that likely? The NHC track shoots it past the NE pretty quickly. Is there enough time for it to do all this stuff they're warning about?

The lengths you need will depend on the size of the area the tarp is covering. they'll come in 8' or longer lengths

Actually if she is going to go anywhere, I'm going to bring her here...not to some place where she doesn't know anyone and will quickly decompensate.

We have a great retirement home a few blocks away, and she can live with us till they have a place ready for her.

My old cat just died so the cats can stay here. We have a big back yard.

Trouble is, I doubt she will budge. But I will try.
