Jewish federation says Estonia welcomes anti-Semitism

Moscow, September 27, Interfax - A non-guilty sentence handed down to border-guard Indrek Kytt who had been charged with anti-Semitism is equivalent to attempts by the Estonian leadership to rehabilitate Nazi criminals, the Federation of Jewish Communities in the CIS and Baltic states said.

Last week, a court in the Estonian city of Narva handed down a verdict of not guilty to Kytt, who had written 'Jews - into the oven!' as a comment on an article on the Delfi Internet portal. The court said that Kytt's statement inflicted no significant damage to the border guard service or to the state.

"The Estonian leadership, as well as the leadership of other Baltic states, have repeatedly tolerated and in some cases, even welcomed attempts not only to rehabilitate, but also to make heroes out of Nazi criminals. We refer to parades held by SS veterans and the erection of monuments to allies of Hitler," the federation said in a statement released on Tuesday.

The fact that Kytt pleaded not guilty, shows that "he sees no wrong in his behavior," the statement said.

"It is possible that he felt support from court representatives. In any case, this demonstrates the persistence of anti-Semitic feeling in Estonian society. Such examples of impunity are just warming them up," the statement said.

The federation said the European Council should react to such incidents.

who had been charged with anti-Semitism

Merely holding an opinion, however odious, should not be against the law. They need to get rid of the law.
