Parents press for consent before school sex surveys (reference to David Parker objections)

Parents press for consent before school sex surveys By Brian Kladko, Globe Correspondent | October 23, 2005

Some Massachusetts parents, outraged that schools quiz their children about sexual behavior, are pushing the state to require parental permission before posing questions like these:

''During the past three months, with how many people did you have sexual intercourse?"

''Have you ever given or received oral sex?"

''Which of the following best describes you: heterosexual, bisexual, gay or lesbian, not sure, or none of the above?"

Such questions -- posed in confidential, anonymous surveys conducted by state or local school districts -- are meant to help public health specialists and educators learn more about student behavior and uncover dangerous trends, including the belief among youths that oral sex doesn't count as sex.

To some parents, however, the surveys represent another example of schools reaching too far beyond the basics, delving into intensely personal issues that are best left to families, not just sex, but suicide and depression.

Last spring, a Saugus father complained about a booklet in AIDS given to his 7-year-old, and a Lexington father objected to a book given to his kindergartener depicting same-sex couples raising children.

Parents also accuse school officials of leaving them out of the loop about their children's education, whether out of neglect or arrogance.

In Newton, Reading, and Shrewsbury, complaints about surveys led school officials to remove certain questions.

Shrewsbury officials, prompted by a father's complaint last spring, reduced the number of questions about sex in its annual survey of sixth-graders. The school system is also giving parents a more detailed explanation of the survey and a form to fill out if they don't want their child to participate. Previously, parents had to call the school administration.

Considering kids in my high school filled in random answers for their ACT(mandatory in Illinois) and they like to BS surveys, how do they think they're getting valid info?

Thank you for the link...we need to bump this up to give this family the financial support they deserve.

I live in Massachusetts, and this man and his family are being demonized in this state as homosexual-hating bigots.

I think he has valid concerns about who should be making choices in the education of his children, about what is considered morally acceptable. He is all for tolerance, but he does not agree that alternative lifestyles should be taught to childen of that age without the express consent of the parents.

When he tried to make the point that the Lexington schools were violating the "Opt-out" legislation that is in place, they said it did not apply in this case and refused to discuss the point.

I told my kids to not fill in the survey or only answer one or two questions and say that they did fill it out; that was as much as they were answering. I can't believe that the people giving out these questionaires really expect honest answers just because the kids are told it's confidential. I wouldn't believe that it was confidential, myself. Kids aren't that stupid. I need to discuss this one with them again. When are these questionaires due to come out again?

So what do you think the odds are that these school officials would go for the idea of abstinence based education? [rolls eyes]

Honestly, oral sex in the sixth grade? I grew up in the 1980s. Doesn't seem like that long ago. And honestly, in 6th grade, I was still nervous about the idea of kissing a girl.

Our society has put waaaaaaay too much emphasis on sex these days. Okay, to be fair, girls weren't dressing like strippers back then, either.

And honestly, how is it the school's business who is having sex or not?

Massachusetts has really been getting irritating as of late. I honestly don't think I could live there now. Sounds like a beautiful, historic place to visit. But give me some sanity for a change.

When I first logged in, there was an ad for a poll on sames-sex marriage, with a line saying, "Weigh in on gay rights and homophobia." Now it says "Should gay marriage be legal? Weigh in on this important issue." Just an interesting tidbit.

Makes we wonder if the school uses this survey as a pass/fail requirement for graduation.

Only a few decades ago and one would immediately peg this survey as an excerpt from Mad Magazine.

Maybe they can get an honorary credit in Sex 201 for writing a report on suitably unnatural experiences.

It is extremely disturbing that some of these questions are being asked to elementary school students.

THANK-YOU. Bookmarked the page. We homeschooled until this year and my oldest two are giving high school a try. (10th and 12th) We moved onto a wonderful little town with a VERY small public school. One month into the school year and they know almost everyone in the school. I don't think they would be incriminating themselves by answering the questions, but they do have Constitutional rights to protection from illegal search and seizure and self-incrimination. What's also bothered me is what colleges are asking for on essays that the students are to submit. They want personal info also, although not to that degree. I told my daughter that all of that was really none of their business and they had no business asking it, but if you want to go to that college, there is probably not much that can be done about it.

"Our society has put waaaaaaay too much emphasis on sex these days. "

And they wonder why kids are doing this kind of thing more and more and teen pregnancies and STD's are on the rise. Someone needs to get a life. If they stopped pushing it on them at such a young age, the kids wouldn't have to deal with thinking about things that they don't need to know about. I'm convinced that it's too much stimulation at too early an age and that it causes more problems than it solves.

In 6th grade, boys should still have cooties.

I've been to Mass. and you're right.
