What'll happen is he's come back with a more conservative nominee, who will be defeated because the liberals think he's too conservative. Then he'll have no choice but to nominate a more liberal nominee.

"The hearings will be make or break for Harriet Miers in a way they haven't been for any other nominee," Schumer said on NBC's "Meet the Press." "She'll have to do very well there. She has a tough road to hoe."

On that he's probably right. Fairly or unfairly, Miers has been diminished in the public eye. She has a lot to prove.

The administration would have to stupid to an almost inconceivable degree to nominate Gonzalez, if the Miers nomination is pulled or goes down in flames.

If the Miers nomination has been a tropical storm for GWB, a Gonzalez nomination would generate a hurricane that would go right off the top of the scale.

I know that GWB is stubborn, but I can believe that he could be as dumb as the Rats have always claimed he is.

I have been reserving judgement on Miers until I could hear her for myself in confirmation hearings.

Wow - what a concept!

Exactly. "Shut your mouth, you Bush haters, or you'll get an even worse candidate."

It's not much of an argument, and it certainly doesn't suggest that they think much of Bush's political intelligence or adherence to conservative principles. Why on earth would Bush choose to make the same mistake twice in a row? He may be stubborn at times, but I don't think he's suicidal.

She spent a good deal of her career in local, state, and federal government, including the Dallas City Council, the Texas Lottery Commission, The Texas State Bar, and in the White House.

I agree that she hasn't spent her entire career in private practice, but he was probably referring to paid work. That leaves out the Lottery Commission and I assume the Texas State Bar presidency.

"But the committee's chairman, Republican Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania, rejected the notion that Miers' nomination was in trouble. Specter said most senators are waiting for the hearings before making up their minds "There are no votes one way or another," he said."

I know. I haven't really understood the "jumping off a bridge" mentality I have read around here. I can't say I am thrilled with this pick, but geez, let's at least give her a chance and trust W's judgement a little.

What the hell do I care about 43% of Freepers think? I'm just angry nobody is giving this woman a chance. The overreactions is not only unwarranted, it's dangerous. The fact we care more about the background of a Supreme Court Judge than we do the President of the US is a very sad and scary thing.

I can't believe a lot of what I've read around here, on many issues. Time for a break I think. ;*)

Because why would someone choose to spend so much time with people who are "far right" elitist and sexist?

She has been given a chance, and she sucks.

She should withdraw herself from consideration.

Now, if Bush should nominate some known "moderate" out of spite, that would be a lot more telling about him and his character than anything else.

But I'm certain you'd be h appy with that if that happened, just so you could say "I told you so."

I care more about the Court than about Politics.

No I don't anymore. The loathsome and unconstitutional affirmative action was perpetuated by the Supremes by ONE VOTE (O'Connor's). So what does Bush do? He nominates a woman whose only documented stand is favoring affirmative action. No I don't trust W anymore.

I don't care, so long as its a more qualified one.

So you would prefer say, Lawrence Tribe to Harriet Miers?

Pull the plug and pick on qualified person, such as Jones, Owens, Rogers Brown, Clement, etc.

LOL. Proof that NYC lawyers should avoid using agracultural metaphors. If he was from Texas he would probably know you hoe rows, not roads.
