MIAMI Oct 22, 2005 — Tropical Storm Alpha formed Saturday in the Caribbean, setting the record for the most named storms in an Atlantic hurricane season and marking the first time forecasters had to turn to the Greek alphabet for names.

The previous record of 21 named storms had stood since 1933. Alpha was the 22nd to reach tropical storm strength this year, and the season doesn't end until Nov. 30.

At 5 p.m. EDT, Alpha had sustained winds of about 40 mph 1 mph over the threshold for a tropical storm.

Alpha Now we haveTropical Storm Alpha forming in the Atlantic.  Alpha (the first number in the Greek alphabet) is the is the 22nd Atlantic storm this hurricane season.  The most ever recorded since the NOAA has been following storms.

I hope Alpha is the last.

This from the AP via ABC news:

We need to use the World War II miltary alphabet, Able, Baker Charlie, Dog, Easy....... IIRC, I think they did that in 1950 and from what I have read, Hurricanes Dog and Easy were bd ones.

"Alpha (the first number in the Greek alphabet)"

And by "number" you mean "letter."

whyat about letters "x", "y" and "z"? Does anyone know why they are not used? It's not as though there are no names starting with these letters...it's just that they're uncommon. (Xander, Xavier, Xenia, Yanni, Yuri, Zoe, ZhaZha )

Hurricane "X-wife" or husband or girlfriend or "partner"
Hurricane "Yo!"
Hurricane "Zzzzz"
By then hurricane season will be over and we'll be snoozing anyway.

There was a time when all the canes were named after chicks.

I think it was Maxine Waters was demanding they be named "black" names, like LeQuisha, Taneka and Karen.
