Vitale Suspect Described as 'Goth' Loner
CNN ^ | October 21, 2005

MARTINEZ, California (CNN) -- The teenage suspect in the beating death of a prominent lawyer's wife was described by classmates as a "gothic" loner who followed the occult and dressed in black from the polish on his fingernails to his trench coat.

The young man is being held as a juvenile in the slaying of Pamela Vitale, wife of lawyer and television pundit Daniel Horowitz. Police say he apparently acted alone.

Horowitz found Vitale's body when he returned to a trailer the couple shared while they built a dream estate on a hilltop in affluent Lafayette, east of Oakland.

Authorities said Vitale, 52, was bludgeoned by a strip of crown molding and fought with her killer. (See video about the arrest -- 4:35)

A gothic cross was carved into her back. That symbol may be a key link to the suspect.

"He was just really a gothic kid, and everyone knew who he was just because of his apparel. When you heard the name, you were just like, 'Oh, that kid,' " a classmate told CNN.

"He just definitely stood out in front of anybody in the school," the classmate added. "When he walked by, everybody talked about him -- like, he definitely didn't blend in."

Authorities would not identify the 16-year-old, and CNN is not naming him because of his age. But news outlets in the San Francisco Bay area widely publicized his name after his arrest late Wednesday.

Former classmates told The Associated Press that the teenager drew a pentagram on the ground at school, telling other students he was reading from the book of Satan.

"LOL. I am an alum of only Mt. Diablo elementary in my K years. I missed the "toad-turning" classes, darn it."

I also remember fondly my medical treatment in the Beelzebub wing of Mt. Diablo Hospital!

A subset of "Goths" is "Emo's". Emo's are "emotionals" -- people who cut themselves. Something's very wrong with our cultural incentives...

More about this guy:

Dyleski, barely 120 pounds, was arrested late Wednesday night at the Walnut Creek house of a family friend and is being held in Contra Costa County Juvenile Hall. His face and leg were apparently scratched, the law enforcement source said. Dyleski's mother had dropped her son there for his father to pick up.

She left instructions that the boy was ``on restriction'' and could not use the phone or computer -- or be left alone.

The killing occurred at the top of Hunsaker Canyon Road deep in the Lafayette hills -- a rugged area filled with a mix of shacks, rusted campers, and a few pricey estates with commanding views of the East Bay hills.

Dyleski lived less than a mile from the site of the slaying down the steep, winding road with his mother, Esther Fielding, and two other families, including David Curiel and Curiel's brother and wife, Fred and Kim Curiel. The Curiels built the house in 1997 out of recycled materials and straw-bales. It had been featured in a ``Green Home Tour.''

"Supposedly, the mom is a nice single mom."

She may have been "nice", but she has issues. Other reports state she is a "long distance healer", whatever that is. She saw her kid change but thought it best to "give him some space." No, we've learned nothing from Columbine.

About the mom:

Dyleski's mother, Esther Fielding, had once owned a small cafe in Lafayette with Kim Curiel called ``Cafe Esperanza,'' or Cafe Hope, serving organic, fair-trade coffee and ``no carb'' frittata.

Fielding also offered healing therapies from her Hunsaker Canyon Road house, promising ways to change core beliefs that ``you're lazy, selfish, useless, a failure.''

I think it's best to blame the person who committed this heinous crime.

Agreed. I think that if the mom had a husband, who realized jr. needed to have his a$$ kicked for being the dweeb he was, that maybe he would've straightened himself our before bludgeoning someone to death. Parenting, or lack thereof, does have an affect on children.

Parenting is important, but I believe single moms can be effective parents.

He was a neighbor and the lawyer had helped his family with some legal matters.
