There is only one more humbling or frightening thing than the realization you have killed a stranger - with full intention of killing him.
That one more humbling and frightening thought is to realize there are tens of thousands of strangers out there in "the dark" awaiting an opportunity to kill you first.
I can truthfully testify that I never met a Marine who enjoyed killing....nor shrank from the responsibility when it arose.
I doubt my Corps has changed much in the nearly 45 years since I left....
