Clerics Warn of Anti-American Feelings Over Alleged Body Burnings Thursday, October 20, 2005

KABUL, Afghanistan — Islamic clerics expressed outrage Thursday at television footage that purportedly shows U.S. soldiers burning the bodies of two dead Taliban (search) fighters to taunt other militants and warned of a possible violent anti-American backlash.

President Hamid Karzai (search) condemned the alleged desecration and ordered an inquiry. The operational commander of the U.S. military in Afghanistan, which launched its own criminal probe, said the alleged act, if true, was "repugnant."

Worried about the potential for anti-American feelings over the incident, the State Department said it instructed U.S. embassies around the globe to tell local governments that the reported abuse did not reflect American values.

Cremating bodies is banned under Islam, and one Muslim leader in Afghanistan compared the video to photographs of U.S. troops abusing prisoners at Iraq's Abu Ghraib (search) prison.

"Abu Ghraib ruined the reputation of the Americans in Iraq and to me this is even worse," said Faiz Mohammed, a top cleric in northern Kunduz province. "This is against Islam. Afghans will be shocked by this news. It is so humiliating. There will be very, very dangerous consequences from this."

Anger also was evident in the streets.

And of course, there is not outrage or condemnation in our MSM or by Muslums anywhere when four US Security were brutalized and their bodies burned and hung by teensagers in Iraq.

I too am outraged. Outraged that the two dead Taliban were not beheaded and burned with remnants of swine. Perhaps someone could post the addresses of the so called clerics so we could send them individual greetings.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I rather gathered was that the idea of burning the bodies was exactly to outrage some muslims so they'd come out of hiding, so we could shoot them?

What i do not understand is why do we send these reporters into combat situations where such things happen.I would think that our military leaders would know by now that most of these reporters are anti administration and anti military.Send them on humanitarian missions only.Which they wont report.Maybe however we have to send these reporters on missions.Does anyone know?

My understanding is the bodies were being burned for health reasons and it was also being used to "smoke" out the others with tormenting them as cowards for not retrieving the bodies. I have NO problem with that. They are cowards and this is NOTHING compared to a living human being, filmed as they struggle to avoid beheading. The men burnt were already dead. Those beheaded were LIVE and used as entertainment - THAT violates OUR sense of CIVILITY so you can imagine what MY thoughts are when they are appalled at a body mistreated when dead.

The honey-moon with embedded reporters is long over, and we need to remove them from the presence of our troops and let the troops do their job. This is not a tea party for the reporters, or the idiotic elite snobs. This is a war.

Now, had this war been on our soil, the US, just where do the Geneva Conventions exists or fit in as a law protecting the innocence. There won't be a law. The terrorist goal is to kill America, and the MSM is doing every damn thing they can to help the terrorist. If a war was on US soil, there would be atrocities committed that is beyond imagination, just because we are hated Americans. People will be burned just as with those two in Afganistan, women and children raped, citizens beheaded in view of our children. So to you puny-ass liberals, what will you do to protest this kind of treatment of our citizens on our own soil? I'll tell you, NOT A DAMN THING! You will sit idly by and watch in horror hoping it wont be you next. We have to be strong, and those who are strong are holding up you puny-ass liberals to keep your freedom so you can protest against our war because we want to live in freedom. You puny-ass liberals just think for once, who is going to protect you or demonstrate for you if this happens on our soil? You then have no rights whatsoever. I do not condemn our troops for what they have done. It is a war, and you find the best way you can to fight, and stay alive, and if this is what it takes then so be it.
