Noonan: It was 1986, and George W. Bush had just turned 40. An unhappy man he was. His life was going nowhere; he had been drinking too much and it was damaging all spheres of his life, including his family."

Now this reads just like a Maureen Dowd column. But since I've been reading Noonan for about 12 months, I know that she doesn't have much more to add.

I've noticed how these "friends of conservatives" are ALWAYS the ones who mention the drinking problem.

That's just shrill and silly. W screwed up and split his base (unintionally). You can go ahead and blame the plurality of Freepers, call them traitors, RINOs, Bunchananites, etc. Regardless, I hope Bush can put the genie back in the bottle by dumping the mediocre Miers.

I still read Peggy Noonan. I know she left her post to campaign for the President. But I get the impression that she holds some bitterness for the administration. Did Rove and company or someone shun her, or insult her? All her columns have this hint of sour grapes to them.
