Court issues warrant for DeLay, sets bail:

AP By William L. Watts

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- A Texas court on Wednesday issued an arrest warrant for former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, and set his bail at $10,000 in a routine step before his first court appearance on conspiracy and state money laundering charges, the Associated Press reported. The issuance of the warrant is "a matter of routine and bond will be posted," DeLay attorney Dick DeGuerin told the A.P. The lawyer said DeLay would make his first court appearance Friday morning. DeLay, who remains a member of Congress, relinquished his leadership post last month after being indicted on a charge of conspiring to violate state campaign finance laws. DeLay contends the charges are politically motivated and that he will be vindicated at trial.

What is the process when an indictment is handed down?...

Aren't most people subject to a warrant and disposition before the judge with either bail granted or being held. Why would a conservative want something special and outside the process......

Yes the process may stink but clean it up and don't ask for special favors.

As far as the judge donating to democrats, that is what democrats do just like republicans do. In Texas the judge is elected. He ran as a democrat in their primary in 02, won and won the General without any Republican opposition. Texas still has many democrats in elective office as does many states I'd assume.

What needs to be done imo is change the process and take this power away from the Travis County DA and place it in the hands of the State AG. jmo.

Because they want to stretch it out all the way to the campaign next year to hurt Delay's reelection chances. They can try him in the media and degrade his support in his district for this entire year.

Just look at the way they reported this title.

They figure that gives them 2 shots at getting rid of Delay. One with the phony charge if they can sell it, and the second chance if they can poison his reelection campaign.

See #123

I think so because the DA will try it in the media as part of the election campaign.

>>Figures such as . . . Obi-Wan Kenobi (Star Wars) come to mind.

Somehow I don't think he will be comforted by comparing himself to Obi-Wan Kenobi.

That's the only reason for the indictment in the first place...."culture of corruption" and all that.

Speaking of "culture of corruption"

Isn't that report about Bill and Hill sicking the dogs on their enemies due to be released soon???

The report Kerry, Kennedy & Durbin trying to get squashed in the Senate

If it's a misdemeanor, then DeLay is exempt from arrest per our Constitution (still the law of the land here, I suspect).

Re-badging the charge as a "felony" to circumvent the Constitution's prohibition on misdemeanor harassment of Congressmen is a travesty.

If what you say is true, then I agree.

But that's not my understanding. My understanding is that the charge is a felony, and Delay was offered the opportunity to plea down to a misdemeanor. That is standard practice in plea bargaining.

Rather than re-badging the charge as a felony after the plea was rejected, the prosecutor reportedly offered to drop it to a misdemeanor in order to secure a plea. Far from "perverting justice," it's the way that our justice system works. Standard operating procedure.

We can agree that the charges are bogus, but I haven't see any irregularities in the way the plea bargaining went. And careful - whatever slack we cut Delay we must cut to everyone else accused of a crime.

I'm depressed. Delay was indicted (although the charges will be thrown out), Frist is under investigation and Rove and/or Libby might indicted next week. Bush's poll numbers are the lowest of of presidency, the MSM is completely ignoring the fact that the Iraqi people (by large numbers) voted for their Constitution and Miers' nomination was, for the most part, a huge letdown (we all wanted a fight with Schumer, Leahy, Kennedy, BIDEN, Feinstein, etc...). I need some good news.

Amen, Ohio! Vindicate this innocent man, O Lord, and set his enemies to confusion. Shine Your light of truth upon this whole situation. In the Name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
