President Bush sought support Tuesday for his guest worker plan for foreigners, hoping to win over skeptical conservatives with a pledge to clamp down on illegal immigration one of a growing number of issues causing friction between the White House and fellow Republicans.
"As we improve and expand our efforts to secure our borders, we must also recognize that that enforcement cannot work unless it is part of a larger comprehensive immigration reform program," Bush said. "If an employer has a job that no American is willing to take, we need to find a way to fill that demand by matching willing employers with willing workers from foreign countries on a temporary and legal basis."

"If an employer has a job that no American is willing to take, we need to find a way to fill that demand by matching willing employers with willing workers from foreign countries on a temporary and legal basis." I'm so tired of hearing this broken record. Please, Mr. President, wake up for crowning out loud!

I'm not against the guest worker plan but I think anyone who has entered the US illegally should not be allowed to participate. This would create some incentive not to attempt illegal entry and would punish those who have. We would also probably get a better class of guest workers who aren't adverse to going back home when the time comes.

There are merits for a guest worker program if properly administered.
Beats the chit out of amnesty for illegals.
I shall now don my armor plated flame resistant suit and go to the bunker.
What a crock. What we have is a bunch of businessmen wanting coolie labor. My stepdaughter in Russia isn't even allowed to visit and her mother is a citizen. We applied for the stepdaughter to come here in August 2002, and by August 2011 she might be allowed to immigrate. In the interim Mexicans sneaking across the border, and then escorted to the bus station for points north. NOT ONE ILLEGAL ALIEN SHOULD BE ALLOWED IN THE US UNTIL ALL THOSE WHO APPLIED TO COME HERE LEGALLY ARE ALLOWED IN.

Illegals are no longer picking fruit or doing farm labor. They displace and depress wages for Americas middle class in construction, painting, dry wall, landscape, fast food, janitorial, roofing, trucking and more. These are the jobs immigrants are taking away from Americans. Mr. President, THESE ARE JOBS THAT AMERICANS WOULD TAKE.

We need to clean up the mess here 1st. Send them all home and then look at guest workers. They shouldn't receive SS benefits though.
To: Hadean
Bad idea. Guest workers tend to become permanent residents. Ask the Germans about their Turkish guest workers.

Give it up, guys- Bush and Rove know only too well that we conservatives will make a bunch of noise about this issue on the internet, but when push comes to shove the next election we'll hold our nose and vote Republican. We're the blacks of the Republican party- nowhere else to go.
Rove and his ilk are much more worried about swing Hispanic voters who could go either way in elections. My advice is: give up, because the world is run by the Man. And the Man likes cheap labor.

Too bad we can't deport Chertoff and Bush from Washington. Yep. And I could think of a few others in D.C. too. Never thought I'd see the day when the politicians just thumb their noses at the overwhelming majority of American citizens that demand border security, and a stop to this lawlessness. We have no representation. It's no where to be seen.
We are flat out being told to run along, get back to work, and pay your taxes. We mean nothing to them.

(It's the borders, stupid.)
This is slightly off the topic of this thread but it is the other side of the coin. President Bush also fervently supports the export of our manufacturing and technology businesses. I know that all good Freepers have enslaved themselves to the false god of "free trade" but consider this; one of my favorite passages from the CEO of Cisco Systems:
"What we're trying to do is outline an entire strategy of becoming a Chinese company," Chambers said.
Part of that strategy means being responsive to requests for investment from the Chinese government.

A properly administered guest worker program would screen peoples entering the country for communicable disease and criminal histories.
Needless to say any peoples who previously violated immigration laws of the United states would be rejected as undesirables due to criminal history.
Any guest worker program that upholds minimum standards of safety and contagion is vastly better than the programs we have in place today.

See what Bush never mentions when he spouts the "Thy're just doing the jobs Americans don;t want to do" is that they are getting paid slave wages. Ok, let's go along with a hypothetical situation: You allow a guest worker program. Do you force the employers to pay a living wage? That will dry up the jobs and the only thing left will be under the table, like now. AQt this point, do you go after the employers? Does any Republican have the nutz to do this??? BUSH YOU ARE REALLY BEGINING TO SUCK!!!
To: mmercier
Any guest worker program that upholds minimum standards of safety and contagion is vastly better than the programs we have in place today. What program is that? Do you seriously think the fed gov has any desire to stop the dirt cheap labor from getting to those employers that vote for them? It's all about money for greedy people that don't want to pay a decent wage or benefits etc. Repeat after me, follow the money, over and over.
