FORMER FBI Director Louis Freeh writes movingly of his disappointment that Presi dent Bill Clinton did little or nothing to in tervene with the Saudi monarchy to let his agents question the accused perpetrators of the 1996 Khobar Towers bombing. But he is at a loss to understand the president's conduct.
In an earlier terror attack, the Saudis had cut off the heads of the suspected terrorists before the FBI could question them. To avoid a repeat, Freeh went to the president and emphasized the importance of intervening with the Saudis to allow questioning.
The Saudis, of course, didn't want the FBI interrogating their suspects for fear that the depth of the al Qaeda network that had grown in Saudi Arabia might be exposed to American and world view. But why did Clinton do nothing in the face of the appeals of his FBI chief?
Freeh implies that lust for donations to his Presidential Library might have entered into the equation, but the Khobar attack materialized long before Clinton was focused on his retirement. His gaze was, instead, squarely fixed on the next election and the soaring gas prices that represented a mortal peril to his chances.
Because his 1993 deficit-reduction package (sounds quaint now, doesn't it?) had raised the gas tax a nickel, Clinton was worried that he'd get blamed for any price spike. A nominal increase in car-licensing fees had cost him the Arkansas governorship in 1980, and the lesson he drew don't mess with people's cars resonated deeply in his political worldview.

Drip, drip, drip.
In direct and indirect ways, Clinton sent messages to the Saudi monarchy: If you want to help me, you'll increase oil production and hold down prices. When oil production rose and the price began to level off as the summer faded and then return to normal, the president was very relieved.
Until Freeh spoke out, I didn't know that Clinton had failed to press the Saudis to let in the FBI. But his reasons for not doing so are quite clear. For him to have picked up the phone and demanded that the Saudis let the FBI question their suspects would have risked annoying them by implying skepticism about their toughness on terrorism. And Clinton could not risk alienating Riyadh.
So even as Clinton was mouthing his determination to find those responsible for the Khobar Towers bombing, he was sending the Saudis a message, by his refusal to make the phone call, that Freeh's demands were not his top priority, gas prices were.
The man is incorrigibly shameless. And his wife is worse.
Clinton did nothing unless he would get money or it would improve his numbers in the polls.
Even then, his CPU (central processing unit) was faulty.
Ping
The good news about his wife is that she is not as smart as he is and a lot more mentally off balance. All that someone has to do is to let her talk and her numbers go down. LOL!
Slick wanted to get through without making any waves. His policy was leave it for the next guy and I can claim nothing happened on my watch. His wagging the dog in Bosnia became necessary to get the press off his butt about Monica, It served no purpose and helped Al Quaeda Muslims, They are still trying to convict Milosovic ,10 years that farce has gone on, and we are still in Bosnia with no exit strategy. He got out just as his policies started a recession, another year and he might have gotten home free.
Truman went into the White House a poor man and came out a poor man, Slick went in with nothing but an old Mustang and came out a multi-millionaire, selling pardons and access to the President is a good business all profit and no overhead.I still havent figured out if Marc Rich paid Cash or his wife paid in Head, Maybe both.
Oh well, at least he got that gold-plated sink from the Saudis for the foyer of the Liebrary.
Even Dwight Eisenhower could not be considered rich when he finished his presidency. A visit to his farm in Gettysburg showed me that.
And look at poor old US Grant. He had to write his memoirs in his dying days just to keep Julia out of the poorhouse.
NEVER, NEVER use the words "truth", "come", and "drip" in ANY article that is talking about Bill Clinton........It's just WRONG!
Rick Lazlo was not the GOP's strongest candidate. Had Rudy been able to stay in the race, history would have taken a different turn.
Her tactics are based on provoking accusations against her and then wailing because "they don't like her". Then the reaction is "those brutes! How dare they?"
But a candidate who doesn't go that route and instead forces her to illustrate her lack of humor and her lack of warmth will really undermine her.
The rules of politics have changed. HRC is scrambling to deal with it, but she has emotional barriers that will make it harder for her to succeed.
In fact her biggest vulnerability is her inability to take responsibility for anything bad
I'm not sure of that. Hillary was a driving force in alot of Slick's decisions. I'm of the school of thought that Bubba was the one sitting on Hillary's lap, while Hillary had her hand in Bubba's back making his lips move.

OH MY! Never crossed my mind, I'll be more cautious next time. LOL!
One question I would ask of all potential 2008 GOP nominees is *will you* hold Hillary accountable for all the failures of Bill's administration to seek out and destroy terrorists?? Unless they are going to hammer this point on the campaign trail then it isn't going to be an issue and that would be tragic.
Hm. Well from what I have read, it appears that the husband was able to spot and leverage political opportunity . But you're right, it's debatable. Remember he advised her to run in 04 after all -- she would have been a more formidable candidate than Kerry. I still think that she would have lost, but it's a position to consider.
But a skill set that HRC has is organizational- ie., she collected and stored information. She did foster personal ties better than he did, that's true.
:-) But the photo is sick LOL
