Bird flu detected in central Russia
Mass death of poultry in private households in the village of Yandovka (Tula Region) was registered as early as on Friday, October 14, a REGNUM correspondent was told by a competent source the neighboring Yefremovsky District of Tula Region. In the district administration the alarm was sounded only on Monday, October 17, when the information on the incident was released at the local administration meeting.
As Deputy Head of Tula Region Agriculture Department Tatyana Subbocheva told the REGNUM correspondent, the number of dead poultry up to 08:00 p.m., October 17, was 247 birds. Supposedly, they were infected by the virus from wild ducks that have settled in the local pounds. According to the official, the final result of the laboratory analysis would be obtained only by the end of the week, but signs of bird flu can be seen right now.
Early on Tuesday, a group of veterinaries, agriculture department specialists, and emergency department officials left Tula to inspect the situation in the district.
By order of Head of Efremovsky District administration Sergey Ponomaryov, limitations were put on coming-out of poultry products from the district; the dead poultry has been utilized in a special burial ground. All the poultry farm in the region started taking preventive measures as soon as the first reports of bird flu in Siberia were released.
They wouldn't admit to a nuculer melt down either.
I don't think it would take much for the disease to spread north to Russia (obviously it got to KZ from PRC somehow).
