I wish Clinton would just immigrate to China. He is nothing but an idiot that is causing harm to the world.

"so WE, the evil environment killers with all these inexplicable trees (since we're always told we cut them all down) sell our logs to the Canadians, who turn it into lumber which our building industry buys back from them along with many other countries like China."

A Canadian company bought our local paper mill, which was one of the largest employers in the area for decades, then idled the mill. The city and county are trying to lure Abitibi back with offers of tax abatements. To be honest, I'm torn as to how I feel about the possibility of the mill reopening (for a number of reasons) but I don't believe Abitibi intended on keeping the mill open when they bought it.

" Still, Clinton said he sympathizes with Canada's position..."

No surprise. Clinton has always been anti-American.

The people in Arkansas knew what they were talking about when they warned us that he would never go away.

Yeh, like an anal cyst.

How can a former (real american) president go to a communist country to play golf with his money men while the country he is supporting is undermining his former country around the world and no MSM group questions it? Or his wife who also supports the comunist country.

I though NAFTA was supposed to tear down trade barriers like this

It was supposed to, but the U.S. decided to apply tarrifs and ignore the WTO and NAFTA rulings on the matter. What's the point of NAFTA if the U.S. isn't going to play by the rules?

"To be honest, I'm torn as to how I feel about the possibility of the mill reopening (for a number of reasons) but I don't believe Abitibi intended on keeping the mill open when they bought it."

Probably not. Canada PREFERS to import our trees to THEIR mills. Because they don't have the environmental regulations, they can process logs more cheaply up there AND ruin our domestic building industry, thus making the US dependent on CANADA for such trade, rather than the other way around.

They also prefer to use THEIR truck drivers to transport our logs....and sorry, but they DO NOT drive up to US standards of CDL licensing. Hubby is constantly having to yell at them in French (which startles them because they're also fond of insulting Americans in French and assuming you can't understand what they're saying) and backing the trucks in himself before they get rolled, jacknifed, bogged or slide down a hillside. The US should demand Canadian truckers qualify for US CDL standards.

Quebec and Ontario (and maybe other provinces) won't let Americans work in Canada without paying for work permits OR let you own a business there anymore unless you hire NOTHING but Canadian citizens.

A friend of the family, who owns rental cabins on a lake in Ontario, was physically escorted back across the Canadian border because he dared to allow family members to VOLUNTEER to maintain the cabins if they wanted (we also got a steep discount on the rates, which he swallowed). His crime? No Canadians worked there. His parents spent the summer there, maintained the cabins, ran the reservation desk etc....all for free. They said he had broken the law because he wasn't paying Canadians their going rate to do the same job his parents did for free.

So IMO, it all boils down to Canada's government cooking their domestic employment rate books to appease citizens and pay for their failed socialist programs.

It would be far better if your town tried to lure in an American company which would keep the mill open that the greedy Canadian companies which hate us. Abitibi would have to agree to sell the mill of course. Which they might not do if they feel there's financial gain in keeping the mill...and keeping it closed. They've got our timber and building industry right where they want it : in a bind. Clinton's environazi regulations were a big help to them, BTW.

If THAT isn't a example of a nasty and already escalated trade war, nothing is.

The ruling in this case was in favor of the US. Canada doesn't like it and doesn't want to play by it.

You have it exactly wrong. I don't think any ruling in this particular case has gone in favor of the U.S. If you know of one, I'd like to hear about it.

The intial ruling was appealed and, in each case, the U.S. lost.

It's worse than that. Even volunteer opportunities in Canada are restricted. Why? Becasue volunteering takes jobs away from workers. For example, you don't see adopt-a-highway programs in Canada because it takes jobs away from unionized government workers. When I was in college, the unions weere upset that college clubs would have bake sales on campus. They said their labor agreement with the univeristy explicitly stated all food sold on campus must be sold by union employees of the university. The college clubs were taking jobs from paid workers and causing them financial hardship. The whole system is designed to reinforce the nanny-state where the government will fulfill your needs. In Canada, I believe private sector employment is actually smaller that the public sector (48% vs 52% I think). Don't forget that doctors and nurses are essentially public employees, too. Their cheques are signed by the government and volunteering in a hospital is a maze of union regulations. There's hell to pay if a volunteer does anything that can be construde as a nurse function.

I wonder how much this Arkansas mercenary received for his little talk? He goes nowhere without being paid, and he returns the courtesy with anti-American talk that provides a banquet for America's enemies.

The best part: Clinton is responsible for both the enviro-nut regs that created a shortage of US lumber AND for the softwood tariffs to protect US producers from now cheaper Canadian lumber.

I'm not in the least bit surprised by this.
