KING 5 Poll: County Executive race neck-and-neck
King 5 News (TV) ^ | 10-17-05 | ROBERT MAK

With the election just three weeks away, a new KING 5 poll shows that the race for King County Executive's is neck-and-neck.

A full 46 percent of those surveyed said they would vote for Republican David Irons now, compared to 43 percent for incumbent Ron Sims.

That is within the poll's four-percent margin of error.

Another factor in this race could be Green Party candidate Gentry Lange, who polled at 7 percent. Four percent of those surveyed told SurveyUSA that they're still undecided.

Irons may be ahead, but strangely enough, many voters know very little about David Irons.

The Republican is hitting the campaign trail hard, saying he's hit virtually every corner of the county.

"Capitol Hill, Burien, I don't care where you are in King County, I've been there," he said.

But who is David Irons, and is he ready for the job?

>snip

Irons has been on the King County Council for five years now, and from the critical areas ordinance, to a now rejected plan to move Southwest Airlines, to the Elections Division, Irons hammers Sims for what he calls bad management.

But Democrats say his conservative record is out-of-step with King County.

He voted against higher wages for child care workers and he opposed a higher tax for Metro service.

"No, I think I'm a very good fit. I'm a fiscal conservative, that means spending money wisely."

>snip

In the race for campaign money, Ron Sims is still the winner, having raised $554,000 in his last report.

David Irons at $367,000.

Money isn't everything, but it helps get your message out in the final days of the campaign.

I'm afraid to get my hopes up in the Peoples' Republic of King County - -but it seems to me this is somewhat HUGH at this point in time. We REALLY need to get Irons on as County Exec. Sims appointed Logan (the current Director of Elections) and stood by him in the debacle of the 2004 elections. Sims is also the one that passed the law that 65% of our property basically cannot be touched without approval (his wife and daughter thought we needed to be more environmental)and loves to spend our $$s. Irons if a fiscally conservative Pubbie and we need him. Sims is black and I hope the buses don't run on election day. Fingers crossed, prayers continue to be said.

I wish you the best, but every wino in Pioneer Square has a pre-printed ballot in his name sitting in the basement of the King County courthouse already. If those guys got away with Gregoire - and they did - Sims will be a snap.

Unfortunately, you're probably correct. They probably all have their address as the Admin Bldg as many did in the last selection. That said, I think (hope) that there are going to be a lot more eyes on the monitoring and counting of the ballots in this election. I just hope we don't have to go through 3 recounts for Sims to get selected.

as long as Sims controls elections, this will turn into a Sims win no matter how large Irons' lead.

Sad, but true.

Time for Dean Logan (King County Elections Director) to whip up a batch of his special sauce.

Like you, I don't live or vote in King County (just thought I would add that).

I would like to believe that the majority of the voters have had their fill of Sims and the corrupt elections. If the voters toss Sims out, it may restore some of my faith in the voters.

I will wait to see what happens and vote in my County and try to change things where I live.

Thanks for the heads up.

Unfortunately it's true...there are no valid checks and balances...how many separate sets of ballots did they find in King county alone?...something like 8 separate sets of ballots. And it happened every time Gregoire started to lose...gee, isn't that interesting...and what an amazing coincidence...8 times over.

Wait this is King County, the Cook County, IL of the Northwest. Irons better win by a fairly large margin because under the recount rule their it's three strikes and your out for Dems and 1 strike and your out for Pubs.

Any news on the survey sample, registered voters, likely voters, etc?

Sorry, I just do not trust the Seattle media to shoot straight.

If Sims goes down, and he just might, then some of my faith will be restored. There are some principled liberals in KingCo that recognized the Gov race was rigged, they want Sims and Logan out. Now hopefully there are enough of these type libs .... ;-)
