"The fallout could be tremendous."

Take that to the bank.

Tell me why we keep voting for Republicans? I keep forgetting.....

"Even if Miers turns out to be a pleasant surprise, her nomination has validated the stealth strategy and gives us no assurances that there won’t be another David Souter next time."

That's an argument I have not seen anybody else make... And I think he has a point although I still support the President.

Gary is right. Some of us (including myself) really have thrown in the towel for now. Novak had it right: Is this what we fought for? Harriet Miers?!?! Not me. If they persist with her, this gentleman is going to put his election year efforts into golf in 2006 and 2008. Had I (and many of us) known we would get Harriet Miers nominated, John Kerry would be President right now - plain and simple. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (his title in 2007) is going to be a powerful man in about 15 months. But we need a majority! For....um....you know....stuff......

Nothing could provide any "assurances that there won’t be another David Souter next time". The next time depends on too many things - both "known unknowns" and "unknown unknowns". And "if Miers turns out to be a pleasant surprise" quite a lot of people would have a rotten egg on their faces.

I used to listen to Gary Bauer, but years ago finally figured out he was just a whiner.

He hasn't changed.

I was over at the Medved vs. Frum thread--all for Miers all the time--but this is where my head says the real understanding of this issue lies...I hope the good woman withdraws her name from nomination.

Funny, I thought you "won the fight" with the votes on the court---something we WILL NOT HAVE if we don't get a nominee who can get put ON the court. Amazing blindness among some people.

Until there are at least 50 votes in the senate to invoke the Nuclear option then its either the stealth strategy or denial of the candidate. There aren't enough votes there at this time to confirm another upfront in your face right winger....

Gary knows this unless he hasn't recovered from the fall off the stage while trying his luck at pan cake flipping.

So now we have Bauer piling on...

..I chose to click on this thread ..... although I have long since cared what he actually says.

I was once a big fan.

We needed another Robert Bork, another Antonin Scalia. Even if Miers turns out to be a pleasant surprise, her nomination has validated the stealth strategy and gives us no assurances that there won’t be another David Souter next time

Good point.

Funny how many people said that Miers must be terrific because Gary Bauer recommended her. Then when he sat down, figured out that he had been snookered, and changed his tune, all of a sudden the same people say he's a clumsy clown who falls off stages and isn't worth listening to.

I just don't believe any of the stories leaked by the Bush administration at this point, because they have been proven false one after another.

They said that the other candidates all refused to be nominated. Not true.

They said that Miers was a distinguished conservative candidate. Not true.

They said that they needed a stealth candidate to get through the Senate. I don't believe that one either. Bush could have called in all his chips on this and twisted a few arms if he chose to. Instead, no doubt, he decided to save his political capital for something he considers more important, so he's trying to twist our arms instead. But there is no issue more important than this.

Kissing Kennedy and then turning around and kicking his base isn't smart.

There's no point saying to wait for the hearings, wait for the hearings, because we won't learn a thing in the hearings that they don't want to tell us. The longer Bush waits to withdraw this nomination, or Miers waits to withdraw, the more the President and the party and the whole country are damaged.

Once again, we didn't ask for this fight. We didn't expect it. It came out of the blue as a complete surprise. And it was truly stupid on Bush's part, either as a political maneuver and or to fulfill the duty he owes to our country as President.

Our country deserves better than this.

Souter was a crony? Souter had no paper trail? On the contrary, he was not personally know by Bush 41 and his paper trails was very conservative. Something turned him. A skeleton in his closet?
