This is partly a story about a company called Apple Computer. It's also partly a story about a fancy new iPod that plays videos as well as music and that could dramatically change the way people entertain themselves. But it's mostly a story about new things and where they come from, about which there are a few popular misconceptions.
Stop and look at Apple for a second, since it's an odd company. It has been around long enough and has a high enough profile that it's easy to forget that. While most high-tech firms focus on one or two sectors, Apple...

Apple / Steve Jobs on another TIME cover
When the iPod turns into a cellphone, I may consider the purchase. (Yes, I say "when"... I don't believe it's an "if".)
Given this was Time Magazine, I thought for sure this was an article on liberal hatchman "Johnny Apple" and how he managed to rise, shine, then mangle and slant the news each day.

Yeah, I bet all those people who downloaded itunes 5.0 to find their ipods, routers, speakers, etc ruined are loving Apple right now. 5.0 ruined my comp to the point it had to be returned (it was only 1 month old, and we got it from Costco). Over at the Apple ipod boards it looks like 6.0 is having problems too
While I think Apple's computers are great, these little music players are far from anything exciting. I'd recommend a Palm Treo with phone/web browser/terminal server/live TV/streaming audio/quicken/etc in addition to the music/video capability which seems to be about all these ipods have to offer.
