This week DC takes on a bigger fish than CAIR: The UN. And he does it with his inimitable flair...

What will happen if Europe and other countries decide to build their own internet? Does it mean our current internet will compete with theirs?

Frankly, this is all just more proof that the US does/did a hell of a lot, and the rest of the world is insanely jealous.

No. They would use it to restrict access of their citizens to certain websites the governing body deemed as "anti socialist" or anti EU, or websites hostile to certain political agendas of the EU./p>

Well, that may happen in their internet. But if the current internet is still going, can't people choose?

JMO but I think it's more than jealousy. It's fear. People can not be controlled if they know the truth and can communicate freely. The Internet as it is today, stands in the way. Think about it. If it weren't for sites like Free Republic, all we would hear would be what the media decides to tell us

Reminds of the joke about the scientist who thought he found the secret to creating life and wanted to show God he could do what He did.
Scientist: OK this is how I can do it.
First I take some dirt..
God: Stop right there!
You get your own dirt!

Yeah, give the UN responsibility over something we built, own, and run to the benefit of everyone in the Free world. Right after I give the keys to my new car to my drunk philandering uncle Freddie, the one currently under criminal investigation. Sorry, but I'm still paying his bills for rehab. It wouldn't be very responsible of me to do that... but wait isn't "responibility" part of the PC ban list of boogeyman words? My bad.

Tell the UN they better get permission from Allgore, father of the internet! LOL

No. The ISPs' in the EU would be under law to restrict access to those websites deemed unsuitable. China does it.

But, technically, can't they do it today? The fact the Chinese has been doing it, it means it can be done even now.

What will happen if Europe and other countries decide to build their own internet? Does it mean our current internet will compete with theirs?I certainly hope not!
I am assuming that, should they stop flapping their lips and stop trying to steal American technolical excellence, and build their useless internet, that all traffic direct and indirect from every muslim country will be filteres out.
That means, for example, if terrorist sandmaggot traffic is routed through France, and the French do not block it, France gets banned too.
Good riddance.

It is too late for them.
Direct satellite internet is already here. There will be no way that any communist, socalist, islamic, anarchic, atheist, martian, or any other government can control it now. There will always be clever, freedom loving people that will be able to hook up.
There will be fewer and fewer repressive, mean regiems in the future due to satellite t.v., phones and internet. The light of truth is being beamed to all the dark places in this world.
America will never turn over control of the internet to the U.N. or the E.U. IMHO.

There are a handful of key components that are controlled via non-profits with oversight from the US Government. One of these is the domain management scheme, and the big-time DNS servers may be, as well (I'm not 100% sure).
By controlling the high-traffic backbone, one could restrict access to all kinds of sites. By controlling domains, one could kill off any "undesirable" websites.

"What will happen if Europe and other countries decide to build their own internet? Does it mean our current internet will compete with theirs?" It means those countries will heavily tax and censor their version of the internet and forcibly prevent their citizens from attempting to use the better U.S. internet via threat of legal sanctions and imprisonment. In other words, they'll muck it all up.
