Fewer than 100 people gathered in the Upstate this weekend to learn about a group that wants to create a government in South Carolina based on the Bible. "Christian Exodus" organizers say they want to have 70,000 people relocated to the state by 2016. With those numbers, like-minded people could take over the government.
Movement founder Cory Burnell said at Saturday's meeting that such a new state government could require people to own property before they could vote and could determine whether the 14th, 16th and 17th amendments to the U.S. Constitution were "ratified properly, and if not, put them up for proper ratification." Those amendments guarantee voting and civil rights for freed slaves, establish the income tax system and call for popular election of the U.S. Senate.
Burnell said he chose South Carolina for the first phase of his movement because there already were many people here likely to agree with his organization's goals. So far, he said, 14 adults and 20 children have relocated to Christian Exodus' two target counties, which he would not identify.
"In 2008, we'd like to complete our first phase and what we'd consider a success there is a majority on the county councils and county sheriff," Burnell said. "City council would be a bonus. School boards would be a bonus. If we felt we had enough support, we'd move on to another phase where we'd select another county."
Burnell, who lives with his wife and two children in California where he works as a financial adviser, has visited the state three times and spent a total of about two weeks here.
Ninety-four people registered for the convention, but only about 50 adults sat in on various meetings at any one time at the suburban hotel, organizers said. Several young families were present, including Troy and Charlotte Perdue from Halifax, Va., who brought their seven children to learn more about the organization and "take a little mini-vacation."
"I learned a lot," Charlotte Perdue said of the speakers. "The basic thing that sticks in my mind is that I've been gypped by the school system." She said now she home-schools her kids.
Other speakers included Upstate radio talk show host John Cobin, who railed against gun control and Presidents George W. Bush and Abraham Lincoln.
"We like guns - they're part of our checks and balances against the evils and intrusions of an interventionist state," Cobin said. "They're going to come up with a SWAT team and ask for your weapons, and you should pull it out immediately, take aim, and fire."
I'll take them seriously when they fire on Fort Sumter.

Boy, this guy is really old - Lincoln and Bush.
Another collection of nutburgers.
I'm sure the AP had no problem in jumping on this.
"Another collection of nutburgers."
Hmmmm... yes and no. Not the direction I'd like to see us go, but could it be, they're trying to do what muslims are trying to do? (Not exactly a group I'd want to be coompared to).
Ohmygosh. Democracy is breaking out everywhere.
Oh, Puhleeze! Not this crap. I used to tease him about "these are the people that you are defending" in the checkout line at WallyMart. Now that he's given his life for his country, I really wonder. Was it worth it? What is wrong with us?
You mean they might *gasp* VOTE?
May be easier than I thought.
LOL
And these same nut cases are the ones who rail about frivolous litigation. Sure, challenge the legitimacy of constitutional amendments, reinstitute slavery, and engage in the fiction that non-property owners don't have a stake in public fiscal policy. I guess they really don't recognize the concept of equal protection of the laws; the essential stupidity and arrogance.
My certain lack of knowledge of Christianity compels me to inquire: is this from the Sermon on the Mount?

Maybe as conservatives we should take their idea and use it ourselves.
Urbanism is the true enemy, which this movement fails to address.
I thought the Great State of South Carolina was already dominated by Christians of the Anglo/Celtic Protestant variety.
Even crackpots are allowed to vote, but the looney left and their media shills would like to see it restricted to approved segments of the crackpot continuum; theirs, that is.
Christian Neo-Confederate crackpot: "Sorry, you don't understand church and state, disqualified."
Islamo-fascist fifth column crackpot: "So, you donate money to Zarqawi and the Michael Moore Minutemen? Hey, everyone's entitled to an opinion. Sign here."
Campus mumia-cong crackpot: "What do you mean you're too stoned to read the ballot? We'll help. Here's your card."
If you've spent much time in Utah you may take this a little more seriously.
Interesting. I'm a hardcore urbanite and will remain one until I leave this earth.

They're going fast!
