Memorial museum: Trade center steel, memories and ``immersive'' look at attacks

NEW YORK -- Visitors to a Sept. 11 memorial museum could relive the 2001 terrorist attacks in an "immersive" area that surrounds them with pictures of the falling towers, the sounds of police sirens and the last words of some of the people who died at the World Trade Center.

The first piece of steel in the trade center's north tower to be hit by a hijacked jet _ as well as lottery tickets and keys pulled from ground zero, and a contemplative area where visitors can leave personal messages _ are among other proposed exhibits for the memorial museum.

The plans, presented in public workshops over the past month, offer the first glimpse of an institution that is likely to become one of the country's most visited museums, while also prompting tense questions over how to tell the story of Sept. 11.

The debate figured in a controversy this summer that ended in the removal of a freedom museum from space reserved for it at ground zero, with some critics saying it was inappropriate to debate Sept. 11's place in history at the site of the attacks.

The memorial museum _ not scheduled to open for at least five years _ would be built around the twin towers' footprints and a slurry wall that are the last surviving remnants of the trade center at the site. Visitors would view exhibits while descending to the footprints 70 feet below street level _ where families would have the opportunity to privately mourn near more than 9,000 unidentified victims' remains _ and then walk up again.

I hope they mean the 9000 unidentified remains of victims.
I'm convinced newspapers hire 8th graders to proof read.

Yep,I assume they meant unidentified body parts that belonged to the 2,749 people who were murdered.

I sort of doubt they mean body parts. That would be pretty gruesome. I hope they mean personal effects.
