OU student left suicide message

By Nolan Clay
The Oklahoman

NORMAN - The University of Oklahoma student who died in an explosion Oct. 1 left a message on his computer that he was going to quit living, his father said.

The FBI read the message to the father Friday, after he came to Oklahoma to clear out his son's university-owned apartment.

Joel "Joe" Henry Hinrichs III, an engineering student, died when his bomb went off about 100 yards from the packed football stadium during the second quarter of OU's night game against Kansas State.

Hinrichs, 21, was from Colorado Springs, Colo. He had a reputation as a loner and had struggled at times with his grades. His parents had begun divorce proceedings.

Joel Hinrichs Jr. said he understood investigators found the message on the computer screen when they arrived at the apartment.

"It was a single line of text on his computer," said the father, who lives in Colorado Springs. "The cursor was still blinking at the end."

The father said he could not recall the exact wording but said his son used profanity in the message and was obviously very angry. "He wrote he was dissatisfied with the situation and was going to quit living," the father said.

His description of the message is consistent with the recollection of others who have been briefed about the investigation by the FBI.

No links to terrorist groups

FBI officials have said they may never know whether the student wanted to get inside the stadium. The student did not have a season ticket.

FBI officials also have said the investigation has not found any links between the student and terrorist organizations.

His father said he thinks his son was just committing suicide and never intended to hurt anyone else.

The father said the FBI on Friday showed him the fractured bench where his son was sitting when the bomb exploded and photos of his son's headless body and a tattered backpack.

The father said when cleaning out the apartment, he learned his son apparently had been having trouble sleeping and had bought Sominex, a sleep aid.

The younger Hinrichs had a long fascination with ammunition and bombs, his relatives and friends said. Inside his bedroom in Norman were several used metal artillery shells -- the largest about 2 feet long. He had belts of used brass shell casings, a box of spent bullets and military ammo containers.

He also had items more typical of many college students -- textbooks, empty liquor bottles, magazines and a martial arts movie videotape.

The father allowed two reporters from The Oklahoman into the bedroom briefly Thursday.

Bomb experts removed explosive-related materials from the apartment Oct. 2. Contributing: Randy Ellis

Jeez, they're even saying "Zoinks" and "Jinkies," in a mocking reference to the "reporter," Scooby. "Those meddling kids," LOLOLOL!

"Nice guys who keep to themselves" should be watched contantly.

Don't think so. I was a nice guy that kept to myself (until I got married). Never a threat to anyone, though I certainly had the equipment and knowledge to be such...

Usually the part about being a "nice guy" is BS. I've read articles describing gangbangers as "nice boys" who only stole to feed their (illegitimate) children.

I didn't know there was any skeleton behind Kasich leaving his seat, and I kind of had liked him (just his personae--don't know much about him politically). However, I'm sick to DEATH of the media thinking they can decide what's news and what's not.

So, the FBI does know when it was written (but not nec who wrote it). Correct?

I'd think that the time at which Hinrichs blew himself up outside the stadium is well established; too many people heard it, for there to be any real question.

This "note" would have to have been written in a time frame that would permit Hinrichs to get from that apartment to the bench outside the stadium. If this were written by anyone after the fact, there would be discrepancies, even if this "anyone" reset the clock on the PC.

And, it's odd to me, that there have been no witness reports placing Hinrichs, at the apartment, leaving the apartment, or along the way to that bench.

OU To Distribute Evacuation Plan To Fans At Game

Monday October 17, 2005 7:32am

Norman (AP) - University of Oklahoma President David Boren says an evacuation plan will be distributed to all fans at Saturday's home football game against Baylor.

In a letter to season ticket holders, Boren advised fans to arrive at the game earlier since searches at gates will be thorough.

Boren wrote that he wanted to update ticket holders about security measures since a deadly explosion October first outside the Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

Joel Henry Hinrichs the Third died when his bomb went off about 100 yards from the packed stadium during the second quarter of O-U's game against Kansas State.

The F-B-I said they may never know if he tried or intended to get inside the stadium.

The letter urges fans to follow the safety plan in case of severe weather or the unlikely event of an emergency.

Talk about a comprehensive "suicide" prevention plan...! They're even helping people to evacuate, should another student become "depressed" and wish to commit "suicide." Thanks for the links to these articles.

I am with you -- this one smells!

I have a real problem with this since obviously the FBI would have confiscated the computers as part of the search warrant -- they always do so this would be no different. Doesn't take much thought to figure that out when they confiscated all those bomb making materials, the would definitely have taken any computers in the apartment.

Someone is spinning -- why is the question? That I am not sure. Since we just got word from OU everyone will be given a printed emergency route out of the stadium when we come through the gates and security has really been tighted, logical thought process would tell you that this was more than a one person blowing himself up while leaving all those explosives, ticket, packed bag, car loaded, and map all set. Maybe he was leaving the area and school instead of checking out on life.

They searched the apartment on the Sunday after the bombing and you can be sure that the hard drives were taken -- FBI put out there was no suicide note, Boren put out there was no suicide note but now we have a suicide note on a computer that was supposedly left on and not searched by the FBI -- yeah right and pigs are flying by my window right now. That defies my Bravo Sierra meter big time.

Personally I would use Ammonium Sulfate. It usually works better, costs less and you don't have to fill out all those forms required by Homeland Security.

The story just grew and grew, as told by Muslims, most of whom weren't even there.

On 10/5, no mention of handcuffs or gunpoint by the professor or the Muslim association president. Another story on 10/5, up to 7 of them were either questioned or detained.

By 10/6, the same Muslim ass'n person tells the Tulsa reporter with the paper's OKC bureau that they were handcuffed and questioned, according to a phone message one of them left on his phone. He refuses to name them.

And by 10/13, it was handcuffed at gunpoint and questioned.

They seem to be bluffing us infidels, I do believe. Trying to set someone up for a lawsuit.

I don't know anything about Congressman Cole but I agree, he seemed like a complete phony on FOX News with John Kasich who was equally transparent.

Cong Cole replaced J.C. Watts in 2002 when J.C. left the Congress. Cole was Secretary of State under Keating when the OKC Bombing happened.

Matches were there the next morning -- don't know about the evening of the bombing. Someone said from a candlelight service but there was none that anyone knows of around here but then nobody around here seems to know much about anything "on the record!"

A very good friend of mine said to watch who retires before 2002 election cycle rather then run for reelection after the Condit deal and you will find someone with something to hide.

Instead of stopping speculation and mistrust they authorities have done nothing but re enforce it.

It's a strange job but somebody's got to do it.

This was covered in-depth on KVI radio in Seattle. Seems as if it took the bomb squad/police? a day to haul away all the interesting items and there were traces of a chemical that had been used by the Shoe Bomber - highly volatile and a mark of Muslim terrorists. The young man's roommates were Muslims from foreign countries. He tried 2 or 3 times to get into the stadium but was turned away when he refused to have his backpack inspected. He had attended a mosque across the street from his apartment, which was also the one which was attended by a former hijacker... Think I got all that correct. Seems the lamestream media is not picking this up. (GASP, big surprise) A few radio hosts were wondering if this was the first attempted suicide bomb in the United States... :( Definitely warrants greater investigating of facts.
