The FBI read the message to the father Friday, after he came to Oklahoma to clear out his son's university-owned apartment.
Joel "Joe" Henry Hinrichs III, an engineering student, died when his bomb went off about 100 yards from the packed football stadium during the second quarter of OU's night game against Kansas State.
Hinrichs, 21, was from Colorado Springs, Colo. He had a reputation as a loner and had struggled at times with his grades. His parents had begun divorce proceedings.
Joel Hinrichs Jr. said he understood investigators found the message on the computer screen when they arrived at the apartment.
"It was a single line of text on his computer," said the father, who lives in Colorado Springs. "The cursor was still blinking at the end."
The father said he could not recall the exact wording but said his son used profanity in the message and was obviously very angry. "He wrote he was dissatisfied with the situation and was going to quit living," the father said.
His description of the message is consistent with the recollection of others who have been briefed about the investigation by the FBI.
No links to terrorist groups
FBI officials have said they may never know whether the student wanted to get inside the stadium. The student did not have a season ticket.
FBI officials also have said the investigation has not found any links between the student and terrorist organizations.
His father said he thinks his son was just committing suicide and never intended to hurt anyone else.
The father said the FBI on Friday showed him the fractured bench where his son was sitting when the bomb exploded and photos of his son's headless body and a tattered backpack.
The father said when cleaning out the apartment, he learned his son apparently had been having trouble sleeping and had bought Sominex, a sleep aid.
The younger Hinrichs had a long fascination with ammunition and bombs, his relatives and friends said. Inside his bedroom in Norman were several used metal artillery shells -- the largest about 2 feet long. He had belts of used brass shell casings, a box of spent bullets and military ammo containers.
He also had items more typical of many college students -- textbooks, empty liquor bottles, magazines and a martial arts movie videotape.
The father allowed two reporters from The Oklahoman into the bedroom briefly Thursday.

I read somewhere that the kid:
1) Was born in Mena, AR.
2) Has a brother who was a park ranger at Ft. Marcy park
3) Visited the Ft. Detrick research labs in Sept 2001
4) Was seen near a Kinkos in Abilene, TX in 2004
Don't know if any of these are significant or not...
"Don't know if any of these are significant or not..."
Is this a "Goggle bomb?" LOL.
She hit that right on the head. I think with each passing goof-up and cover-up by the media, the box sinks lower into their grave. The faster the better.
You only get flak when you're over the target...
Hence the vociferous displays in regards to the bloggers (some of whom are reputable seasoned reporters), and folks here at FR...
The MSM dropped the ball big time in this case and the only way for them to save face at this point is to go with the "official story" so as not to appear incompetent. Unfortunately, in the long run, this will only serve to make them look even more foolish and inept, IMHO.
"The MSM dropped the ball big time in this case and the only way for them to save face at this point is to go with the "official story" so as not to appear incompetent."
I respectfully disagree. They didn't drop the ball, they cooperated with the various security agencies early on, but now they're absolutely livid at the thought of ever validating FR and so-called VWRC bloggers again (Rathergate). They'd have some serious egg on their collective (collectivist?) faces then, so it's not going to happen.
"You only get flak when you're over the target..."
I agree.

They already do appear foolish and inept...I share your HO.
How can they prove that Joel wrote the message on the computer?
Maybe that was Fazal's job.
"the box sinks lower into their grave. The faster the better."
True.
Oh, and I have some ruined papers here due to your tagline...just caught it and I like..
As far as dropping the ball I was referring more to the fact that the major news networks didn't send anyone down there to investigate it first-hand - at least to my knowledge they didn't. (o:
You are definitely right though about the whole Rathergate thing leaving a bad taste in their mouths. Perhaps, as you point out that is the main reason they are so quick to put everyone down...
>>>It said, "Death to the f*cking infidels!"<<<
or maybe:
"Goodbye, Cruel World. Now bring on those 72 virgins!!!"
"but now they're absolutely livid at the thought of ever validating FR and so-called VWRC bloggers again (Rathergate). They'd have some serious egg on their collective (collectivist?) faces ...,"
Point taken.
Thanks I am thinking of some bumper stickers for next year. I am sure no harm will come to me here in NYC LOL
"I am sure no harm will come to me here in NYC LOL."
Now that is funny.
Agee. I think there are some bad apples in the Oklahoma FBI, and they're entrenched.
" Perhaps, as you point out that is the main reason they are so quick to put everyone down..."
The stage is set: if the story breaks out, WE'LL be the story, not Hinrichs, or the TATP backpack bomb he blew himself up with outside a stadium filled with 84K people, or the ammonium nitrate that Hinrichs attempted to purchase just a few days prior, or the large cache of explosives found in his apartment, which was "scrubbed" by the FBI, as reported by CNN.
(And, if you're wondering why I've repeated, several times, what still remains "founded and true," to paraphrase Boren's oddly worded press release of last week, I just want to have a nice, concise statement as to why this is not wild speculation, for all those "Goggle hits" that are, in some quarters, apparently a cause for concern at some future date, lol.)
and some Freepers seem to share Mr. Boren's desire that this be tidied up as quickly as possible and without and real curiousity for where certain evidence could lead.
At this point, nothing has been either proven nor disproven based on the publicly released evidence, misleading statements aside.
Only silly if you can believe that a computer typed suicide note left in the apartment AFTER THE FBI SEARCH was found by his Dad.....
Kasich ticked me off big time. He was so arrogant in his certainty that "conspiracy theorists on the net" are pushing the Hinrichs story for nefarious purposes. He even had the nerve to say that his crappy program (Hometime ot Hometown or Village Idiot or whatever it's called) would put this story to rest.
I don't think so, Kasich. Why was it again that you had to resign your Congressional seat? Was it girl trouble or boy trouble???
No its just that they are "shocked" when the quiet guy goes (excuse the expresion, postal), they are NOT shocked when the a@@hole goes postal....
"Only silly if you can believe that a computer typed suicide note left in the apartment AFTER THE FBI SEARCH was found by his Dad....."
CNN reported that Hinrichs and Cheema's apartment was "scrubbed" by the FBI.
