Bush's woes are McCain's opportunities

WASHINGTON - Strains between President Bush and his conservative supporters are giving John McCain an opening - albeit a narrow one - to make inroads among those activists as he eyes his prospects for a 2008 presidential run.

--snip--

In the past few weeks, McCain, 69, a decorated former prisoner of war and critic of pork-barrel spending, has:

* Called on members of Congress to give up billions of dollars' worth of pet projects adopted earlier this year in a massive transportation spending bill, saying the money should instead go to hurricane relief.

* Proposed delaying or altogether canceling the president's Medicare prescription drug coverage plan. The program is about to take effect but remains controversial because of long-term costs in the trillions of dollars and criticisms it will help the pharmaceutical industry more than it does most older Americans.

* Pulled together the bipartisan support to attach a controversial amendment to the Senate's version of a defense bill, restricting tactics the military can use in interrogating detainees in the war on terror. The president sees the amendment as an affront. But it appeals to some religious conservatives and advocates of individual liberties who feel that torture and abuse of detainees are inhumane and run counter to Christian principles. At the same time, McCain stands by the overall war effort, as do a majority of Republicans.

--snip--

Even so, many of those conservatives say they have such an abiding distrust of McCain's broader agenda and loyalties that they are unlikely to embrace him, regardless of the nation's biggest challenges or the rest of the GOP field for 2008.

He couldn't get the nomination in 2000 when he was liked by the majority of Republicans. Now that he is hated by so many, it is statistically impossible for him to even get the nomination.

McCain Amdt. No. 1977 is not an asset in McCain's camp, but a huge liability, as is his AMNESTY immigration proposal with Ted Kennedy.

McCain will NEVER be President.

These idiots confuse a disagreement with a divorce.

McCainiac has as much chance as getting the GOP nomination as I do being nominated for SCOTUS.

Wait.... Bush is on line 2. Now what does he want?

I am pessimistic today.
What difference does it really make when the Government can tax and then give give money to some people and foreign countries, it is not enough so they borrow extra money to throw money down a rat hole?

This is just another media outlet slobbering over McCain.

It would be nice if they could be somewhat less than hostile to a Presidential candidate that dosen't make me vomit at the mere mention of their name.

I wouldn't vote for McCain for dog-catcher. He would catch the wrong dog and then run to the nearest TV camera to brag about it. :-(

Vote for someone else or not vote at all. Whatever. I know one thing I'll never do: vote for McCain for anything. Unless I'm on a jury. And the charge is treason. Then I'll vote: guilty.

I think not. Anyone who is upset with the Miers nomination is very unlikely to favor McCain. Their chief fear is that Miers is a liberal in disguise. McCain doesn't even have a disguise at this point.

Too bad the POWs and MIAs aren't available to respond to this as McCain and Kerry turned their backs on them.
