Benjamin Fawley, a suspect in the death of Taylor Marie Behl, told police that the Vienna teenager died accidentally while they were having a sexual encounter, an attorney representing Behl's mother said yesterday.
Her grieving mother disputed the account.
"Let's be clear -- Ben Fawley murdered my daughter," Janet Pelasara said during a hastily arranged news conference outside her attorney's McLean office. "His claim that it was accidental is just one more perversion of the truth in his ever-changing web of lies."
Fawley told investigators that he had consensual sex with Behl in her car parked near a beach in rural Mathews County, Va., the night of Sept. 5 and that he accidentally choked her, according to George O. Peterson, Pelasara's attorney. Fawley also told police he panicked after Behl died and dumped her body in a ravine, the paper reported.
Pelasara called Fawley "a big, fat liar" and said she was speaking for the 17-year-old daughter she buried Friday.
The notion that Behl and Fawley were lovers is wrong, Pelasara said. Behl had sex with Fawley once in April and decided she did not want an intimate relationship with him, her mother said.
"She did it once out of curiosity and then didn't want anything to do with him," according to Pelasara, who said she learned about her daughter's April encounter with Fawley through conversations with Behl's closest friends. "He had a dark side, and Taylor wasn't a dark side kind of girl."
"It is apparent that my daughter died a violent and unspeakable death at the hands of Ben Fawley that night and was not a willing participant," Pelasara said.
Fawley has a history of violence toward girlfriends, Peterson said. "Ben Fawley has a very significant past," Peterson said. "He has a violent nature. He choked previous girlfriends."

There are some here who will not accept the fact that there are evil people in the world, and the job of parents is to teach their children how to detect these beasts and avoid them. They expect, with total disregard of the facts, that you should be able to send your naive 17 year old daughter out to play in the world and she should suffer no harm regardless of her carelessness. And if you speak out against this notion, you are blaming the victim and they will descend upon you with meat hooks. Just watch and see....

How did it go from Fawley saying he didn't know what happened to Taylor, he's upset people saying he had something to do with her disappearance (as I gathered from his website etc) to I killed her and it was an accident.
There must've been something in between and I missed it...or something. Yeah, I know this perv is in prison for the child porn. Oh, there is her reported kidnapping. I got that part too..it's just this is a HUGH jump.
As a grannie, who has seen too many younguns go forth into the world, assuming it was theirs for the taking, not listening to anyone who tried to warn them otherwise, I grieve for this girl.
She had no clue. She was only 17 or 18. She wanted some "fun". It never occurred to her that there was a downside, because she was so young. I feel for her mother and father, her siblings, for I have known so many young girls like her.
It is the reason why some cultures demand that all young girls have constant chaperones.
Girls just want to have fun, remember? Therefore they are ever so vulnerable. Bring back old hairy-lipped maiden aunts, ever present at their sides, interfering forever until they get married off, right?

All we need is the suppression of the politically correct nonsense that prevents us from using the Taylors and the Natalie's as examples to these young girls and TEACH them that rapists can't afford to leave witnesses alive.
We need to be able to point to these mothers and fathers who never managed to get the point across to their offspring as a good BAD example to other parents.
Boys usually get their butt kicked somewhere in grade school and learn the lessons at an age, and in a setting, where any real damage is unlikely. But Girls are, by and large, protected from this and sent into the world with not a single clue. And its politically impossible to suggest this should change or you become a target for blaming the victim.
I agree, jacquej. Back in my young, single, naive days, I allowed myself to get into situations where if the guy was evil, I'd be dead. I guess I lucked out--they were just horny. We really need to teach our daughters better about the very real dangers that are out there. I know I wasn't. Poor girl.
I was in downtown Nashville Friday night and got quite an eyeful. The way young women today blatantly advertise their sexuality is really sad.
So much for feminism.
Women have made no progress. They have chosen to take the low road.
Many now look desperate and cheap.
Young women don't even look vulnerable anymore. Many look like they have been passed around... A LOT.
Good luck finding a young woman who doesn't look WAY TOO WORLDLY even as a teenager.
Why did their parents let these young girls turn into sluts?
I know, and you know.
But, the vulnerable young girls do not know. And, good parents are like salmon trying to swim upstream. Even if they try to tell their girls, the media fights against that parental "antedeluvian" message, and the poor girls buy the media, trying to be "Independant women", rejecting wisdom of their elders.
Time to move to rural areas, guard the daughters like you would prize livestock, and teach them to think of themselves that way. It isn't right to blame the young women, but makes more sense to blame the media culture.
As an "older woman", who has raised a passle of kids...
Let me tell you this, and please, if you are a younger parent, understand that when your dearest babies become teens, they become victims of "current think", and whatever you try to tell them, or have tried to teach them, is lost in the wind.
There is no way to get the idea of serious danger across to a teen. Generally speaking, if they have been raised in reasonably sensible families, they do not understand the concept of evil. It just never occurs to them that people have nefarious motives.
This is why hairy-lipped, beady-eyed, maiden aunts were used as chaperones. And, it is time sensible parents brought the concept back. Young girls are too naive to understand, too easily talked into dangerous situations, and too late to figure it out, alas.
My heart goes out to the mother of this 17 year old. I know her pain.
It's certainly time to bring back the notion of colleges serving in loco parentis. I was talking about this case just yesterday. It helped convince my wife and me that we must put aside enough in the college fund so that when our daughter is 17, she can go to one of the few schools that will actually monitor her behavior and look out for her welfare.
have 3 daughters... I agree, however start with a .22 pistol and then work your way up. I also agree to talk frankly about how a man can overpower a woman... doesn't matter what "oriental self defense method" they use. Guys are stronger and generally can kick a woman's ass.
Guns are good, knives are OK , feet, knees, elbows and hands are last resort then RUN!!!
By the way...show your girls how to use a knife...no overhand stuff...I started with magic markers to show how to gouge then slash....

I agree with the "high skank level" of dress among young ladies today, mine don't even think about it... however, they don't deserve the death penalty for being young and naive......it's a dangerous world sometimes.
Good comments. The thing that bothers me in all of this is the whole sex for fun with this 17 year old girl. What the crap kind of morals did this family teach their daughter? Of course the man who murdered her should fry, but she probably would be walking around alive if she hadn't been sexually involved with this man.
That seems to be the same thing with the girl down in Aruba. She seems to have had not morals at all. Drunk down in a foreign country, and getting into a car with three boys after midnight?
What a shame this girl could have had such lousy parenting. She was led down that path by parents who probably never said no to her in her life.
