The Apple Polishers, Explaining the press corps' crush on Steve Jobs and company
Slate ^ | 10/13/2005 | Jack Shafer

Posted on 10/15/2005 1:13:33 PM PDT by Panerai

I don't hate Apple. I don't even hate Apple-lovers. I do, however, possess deep odium for the legions of Apple polishers in the press corps who salute every shiny gadget the company parades through downtown Cupertino as if they were members of the Supreme Soviet viewing the latest ICBMs at the May Day parade.

The Apple polishers buffed and shined this morning in response to yesterday's Steve Jobs-led introduction of the new video iPod. The headlines captured their usual adoration for the computer company: "Apple Scores One Against Microsoft In Video Battle" (Seattle Post-Intelligencer); "Video iPod Premieres in Apple's Latest Showcase of Dazzling New Gadgets" (San Francisco Chronicle); "iPod Evolves from Sound to Sight") (Detroit Free Press); "The Video iPod: It Rocks" (Fortune); "Apple Seeds New Markets With Video Version of iPod" (Globe and Mail).

The pairing of the V-iPod announcement with news that the iTunes store will sell Desperate Housewives and other ABC fare drove the story to Page One of USA Today and onto the biz fronts of the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the New York Times. Among American newspapers, the New York Times is easily the most enamored of things iPod, having run 63 stories with the word "iPod" in the headline in the last 12 months. That's almost as many as the Post and the Los Angeles Times combined.

This person writes for Slate. Need anyone say more? If something like this irritates this person this much, how do you think he would react to real life issues? He needs to grow up and get a life.

He calls them "apple polishers", since he works for Slate would that make him a "banana polisher" ?

Microsoft is a large, dominant company that has made many people fabulously rich. Very evil company. The Media doesn't like this.

Apple is a small, niche company. A small, almost elite cadre of people buy their products and keep the company solvent. Through the discriminating taste of this sophisticated crowd, Steve Jobs has become rich enough to be able to donate quite a but of money to left-wing causes. A company like this deserves all the free publicity it can get.

This guy didn't even mention that he used or tried out an IPOD. Which means, he didn't. Is this good journalism??

The IPOD rocks, period!

Apple has always had a huge following with the liberal side of the MSM. The MSM loves the hippie/socialist cult behavior that emanates out of Apple and they absolutely ass-kiss Steve Jobs at every opurtunity possible.

And Microsoft's illegal abusive monopoly has made sure Bill Gates has billions to donate to the UN Population Fund for abortions. What's your point again?

In case you didn't know about your technological savior's pass time here's an excerpt from one article:

In 2000, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation awarded a $57 million grant to the United Nations Population (UNFPA) Fund. While the grant was ostensibly to fight AIDS among African youth, UNFPA also used some of the funds for its reproductive health-abortion agenda.

The UNFPA has been criticized for its ruthless disregard for Third World nation’s sovereignty, cultural traditions and religious beliefs in pursuit of global de-population to protect western interests.

In an in-depth interview with Bill Moyers in May of 2003, Gates named the inspiration behind his funding of pro-abortion population control measures...

"When I was growing up, my parents were always involved in various volunteer things. My dad was head of Planned Parenthood. And it was very controversial to be involved with that. And it’s so fascinating. At the dinner table my parents were very good at sharing the things that they were doing. And almost treating us like adults, talking about that," Gates told Moyers.

Jobs is brilliant at marketing the sub-cultural/hippie appeal to make Apple's brand so valued. It's also part of who he is and has always been. One thing undeniable, however, their products are certainly not third-rate. He has a keen drive for excellence that has sometimes been his undoing.

In case you think that one article is just out of tinfoil hat kook-ville, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation provided the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF) $8.8 million in 2000. It's not an accident that they support the abortion-loving UN Population Fund as well. Source

There's nothing more pathetic than a bigot that thinks there's a good reason for their bigotry....

Anything more than this is superfluous.

The best part was the link to the 'apple iProduct' spoof.

It's funny because it fits a lot of people...like those who collect every ipod version.

Wow, talk about damning with faint praise:

Unfortunately I sold too early. Meanwhile I still own MSFT which has done jack squat.

Mine is a dual-core Intel Powerbook, hopefully early next year.
