Can you remind me which election it was that Hitler won? He was soundly trounced in every one he was in. His rise to power was due to appointments. These appointments were largely done under duress (Hitler had 20 goons for every soldier in Germany. A large # of the soldiers were either very sympathetic to his cause or were at his side.) The only power struggle he won was the Enabling Act, which made him Fuehrer. This was after the Communist representatives were temporarily locked up after the Reichstag was burnt. Hardly a fair election.
Looks like an election to me.
Try 1932. The Nazis steadily increased their vote totals in 28, 30, and 32, by which time they had 44% (more than Clinton in 1992). With the "Conservative" party, they had 52% in a coalition, which, as you correctly (but irrelevantly) note, "appointed" Hitler. The fact that he personally didn't win a slate is completely irrelevant, and totally nit-picking. It was democracy that gave Weimar Republic Hitler, and those who don't remember the past are doomed to repeat it.
