Romanowski admits steroid and HGH use

Bill Romanowski used steroids and human growth hormone supplied by Victor Conte, the former NFL linebacker tells CBS' "60 Minutes" in an interview to be broadcast Sunday.

Romanowski said he took illegal steroids for a two-year period starting in 2001 and got them from Conte, the former head of the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative, which has been at the center of a steroids controversy in several sports.

Advertisement "I took (human growth hormone) for a brief period and ... I definitely didn't receive what I got out of THG," Romanowski said, referring to another drug he got from Conte.

In November 2003, the NFL notified Romanowski that he tested positive for the steroid THG.

Romanowski played linebacker for the San Francisco 49ers, Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos and Oakland Raiders in a 16-year career that ended in 2003.

Last May, he agreed to pay former Raiders teammate Marcus Williams $415,000 in damages for a hit to the face during a practice drill in 2003. Williams' career ended after his eye socket was broken.

Romanowski also said he once broke running back Dave Meggett's finger on purpose during a playoff game against the New York Giants. He writes about his NFL career in a soon-to-be-released book, "Romo, My Life on the Edge."

So where have we seen such rage before? Roger Clemens, anyone.

The illegal substance abuse is rampant in sports.

Clemens had a four-year period, beginning when he was 30, when many people believed he was in decline. Included in that group were the Boston Red Sox, the team he played for during the first 13 years of his career. After the 1997 season, the Red Sox did not re-sign Clemens, who was eligible for free agency. It seemed like the right move.

After going 152-72 in his first nine seasons, Clemens was 40-39 from 1993-96. What's more, his winning percentage twice was below that of his team during that four-year stretch, something that had never happened in the previous nine seasons.

Also during the span, Clemens' earned run average twice was over 4.00, a level where it had never been before.

It was a clear picture of a player in decline. And why not? He was 34 when he finished the 1996 season with a 10-13 record on a team that was eight games over .500.

Except that he wasn't in decline. Not even close.

He signed with the Toronto Blue Jays in 1997 and, on a team that was 10 games under .500, he was 21-7. It was the first time he had won 20 games since 1990. His ERA of 2.05 was the second lowest of his career.

Once again, he was Superman. And, of course, it was all due to his incredible workout routine. There was never a word about chemical enhancement.

It's not like Clemens was some kind of media favorite. Like Bonds, he has a history of being a major jerk.

Clemens is 42 and pitching as well or better than ever.

Last year, he was 18-4 with the Houston Astros -- the third-best winning percentage of his career. He won his seventh Cy Young Award -- 18 seasons after he won his first.

Going into his scheduled start against the San Francisco Giants last night, he was averaging better than a strikeout an inning and his ERA was a ridiculous 1.10.

In his tell-all book, "Juiced; Wild Times, Rampant 'Roids, Smash Hits, and How Baseball Got Big," Jose Canseco wrote: "I've never seen Roger Clemens do steroids, and he never told me that he did. But we've talked about what steroids could do for you, in which combinations."

He also said Clemens showed "classic signs" of steroid use.

I could look at Romanowski's eyes and tell he was pumped up on something. His rage and antics on and off field were not normal...........even for a overpaid super-id athlete.....

Romo went to trial in Denver and beat a rap for his wife and a friend doing a false prescription racket to get him some kind of diet pill that he used as a stimulant.

Sad. His wife always seemed a nice lady.

His wife might have been on something herself.

The causal evidence that steroids and hormones makes you into a raging thug isn't really well-established except in anecdotal evidence; what is true is that very aggressive players tend to be the ones to are inclined to steroids. The player is usually violent before the steroids; that is certainly true in Romo's case; he was out of control before he started with the HGH. As for Roger, well that is just speculation. I for one, do not have a big problem with hormone treatments for athletes; most of what is said about hormones is simply false, junk science and rumor and myth trotted out again and again to scare people. Used judiciously, hormone treatment may be one of the most promising anti-aging treatments in the last several centuries, seriously.

Did you see him hurl a broken bat at Mike Piazza during the world series in NY

Have you ever seen the look on his face when he threw at some batter's head?

Joe Torre suggested the thrown bat was just 'emotions'.

His knickname.....headhunter......his bat throwing incident towards Piazza was frightening to watch.

I don't like to see people lose control of their 'emotions'.

Particularly grown men!

Agree with you 100%. Romanowski was and is a dirtball.

Have you ever seen the look on his face when he threw at some batter's head?

Oh please. Have you ever seen the look on Bon Gibson's face when he threw at a guy's chin? How about Ty Cobb when he slid into second using his spikes as a weapon? Did you ever see the look on Dick Butkuss' face after he leveled a running back or how about Jack Lambert and Ray Nietchkie, who had reputations for hitting their opponents as they were walking back to the huddle after the play was over. All of these playes played before the steroid era. What they had in common is that they were great competitors, who hated to lose. They also played the game before is became sissified.

Sports demigods can do no wrong. There must be some error in this article.
