n the waning days of a record season, a helicopter buzzes treetops here in a remote corner of the "Emerald Triangle," redwood country notorious as the USA's premier producer of marijuana. (Photo gallery: Rooting out pot hot spots)

State narcotics officers from CAMP - Campaign Against Marijuana Planting - are searching for "gardens" to eradicate and find six on a warm, cloudless day.

They strap onto a 150-foot cable dangling from the chopper, drop into the pot patches, hack down the plants and bundle them for the chopper to haul back to a landing zone.

Spraying the plants with diesel from a helicopter is faster, cheaper and more effective.

Yeah, pollute the soil and water to get rid of a few pot plants? Come on.

The largest living things are Sequoia trees.

Actually, the largest living thing is 2200 acre fungus growing in Oregon.

The second largest living thing, shown above, is the only known descendant of Jabba the Hutt.

Oh, heaven help us if we pollute the "environment". How silly. In most cases, the spray doesn't even hit the ground. Besides, doesn't diesel - crude oil - come from the ground?

I think you were half right but I was wrong; you were correct that tree I was referring to was the Tallest; the largest is an underground fungus in Oregon

Just start tax them and allow those morons their happy drug. We have lost the drug war and won't admit to it. The drug war was created primary over the racist ideas that drugged out black men is a scray concept.

We got a big underground fungus here in Michigans UP as well. There's some debate as to it's age but they figure it started growing shortly after the last ice age.

And there other more effective ways to deal with this, especially using technology. This is an article about law enforcement using bad technique.

Over/under on how much of the 'harvest' ends up in the trunks of their cars at the end of the shift?

This seems like a waste of time and resources, but I suppose that there is a slight chance that Ossama is hiding in one of those patches. Perhaps that makes it worth the effort.

Exactly. High tech, whatever that may be, however long that discussion may take, whatever money has to be appropriated, whatever staff has to be trained, whatever EISs are needed, whatever "community focus groups" need to be contacted, is unnecessary. The solution for marijuana eradication is quite simple, is proven and works.

That's why this year there won't be a harvest, and marijuana will be unavailable on the streets.

CAMP gave us military roadblocks, citizens assaulted by weekend warriors and public outrage. CAMP is the primary reason so many have turned against the War On Drugs and support medical marijuana in California.

That they are heading down this road again shows just how stupid the War On Drugs mentality is!

Trying to make a plant illegal doesn't make a whole lot of sense begin with. It exists, it's here, if they want to play God why not just outlaw smoking completely? Whether it's marijuana clouding up your head or tobacco clouding up your lungs there's not a whole lot of difference, the experts tell us they're both unhealthy. Send in the jackbooted troops, we can't let the ignorant people make their own choices.

Oh please. California is a cesspool for liberal fruits and nuts. That's why every abuser out there will have a medical card.

Actually, it is common to find patches of hemp growing in the wild (Its not called 'weed' for nothing.. it really does grow like a weed). Anyways, you get about as high off of smoking wild hemp as you do from smoking a pinecone, yet state governments still spend millions of dollars a year 'eradicating' it aka creating lots of make-work/boondoggle jobs.
