The 'time of cosy tea-drinking' with Muslims is over, says the minister who would ban the burka (ROBERT VOS/EPA)

THE Netherlands is likely to become the first country in Europe to ban the burka, under government proposals that would bring in some of the toughest curbs on Muslim clothing in the world. The country’s hardline Integration Minister, Rita Verdonk, known as the Iron Lady for her series of tough anti-immigration measures, told Parliament that she was going to investigate where and when the burka should be banned. The burka, traditional clothing in some Islamic societies, covers a woman’s face and body, leaving only a strip of gauze for the eyes.

Who would have thought that The Netherlands would be the first country in Europe to do something so sensible?

They seem to be very concerned with their growing Muslim population and recently have done things to "discourage" them. I think they really got serious after the Van Gogh murder.

My feeling (and that's all it is) is that the Netherlands and Denmark are the countries where the anti-Muslim backlash in Europe, which has been simmering for some time, is the most advanced. Politicians in those countries seem to say things that are still unspeakable in much of Europe.

Politicans in Norway also speaks freely about Islam. Recently the head of Norways second biggest party has gone far on his remarks about Islam and terrorism.

Dude,

Look into "search" sometime.

Yes, I know it's odd that a media piece dated October 13 would have been posted here at FreeRepublic on October 12, but hey, that's why FR is so great, right?

They should have done this before letting in all those unskilled Islamic immigrants. Until they streamline and reform their immigration policies, this will only do more harm than good.

High time, too! With any luck, this will be the start of a great trend...one that will put the Islamofascists on notice that their terrorism and intimidation tactics don't fly with the civilized world anymore.

From the article:

Several towns in Italy, including Como, have invoked legislation introduced by Mussolini that bans hiding one’s face in public to impose fines on burka-wearers.
Anybody just a wee bit discomfitted about the direction we're heading?

in order of increasing coverage - hijab, chador, abaya, burka, domestic imprisonment.

Any civilized western society has got to stop at the chador - the limits of our tolerance. (and I would really prefer no Muslims but seeing as we've got them...)

Ummm...I hate to have allies like I will have by saying this, but what effect does banning a piece of clothing have on curbing terrorism? For instance, what's the difference between banning burkas and banning camouflage caps after the OKC bombing? Free states have freedom of religion. Their religion requires them to wear burkas I guess. Amish men and women are required to wear hats, etc. What's the difference?

It begins. There will be bloodshed in Europe as the libertines battle the Muslims for control. The libertines still have a numerical advantage, but that is quickly waning as Old Europe ages. I place the odds at 3-2 in favor of the Muslims at this point.

There’s only so much shoving one can take before they shove back. Tough noogies intolerant Islam...if you don't like it go somewhere else, like back to the Islamic paradises you came from.
